Bill O’Boyle joined the South Dakota coaching staff ahead of the 2016 season. He serves as the offensive line coach and run game coordinator.

O’Boyle started as a graduate assistant and then assistant coach at Chadron State in the late 1980s. From 1990-94 he was at Western Illinois, his alma mater, as the offensive line coach and strength coach.

In 1994 he returned to Chadron State as an assistant coach, was offensive coordinator from 1999-2004 and was the head coach from 2005-11. As head coach, O’Boyle compiled a 54-22 record, including three-consecutive undefeated regular seasons and three Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference titles from 2006-08.

Under O’Boyle, the Eagles won 28-straight RMAC games and earned three NCAA Division II playoff berths, advancing to the quarterfinals in ‘06 and ’07 and to the second round in 2008. He is a three-time RMAC Coach of the Year and was named the Liberty Mutual Division II Coach of the Year in 2007.

Twice he was named American Football Coaches Association Region 5 Coach of the Year. He was also the 2006 Sportexe Division II Coach of the Year and Football Gazette National Coach of the Year. He coached 13 All-Americans during his tenure at Chadron State. Some of his former players are San Diego Chargers running back Danny Woodhead and Cleveland Browns offensive lineman Garret Gilkey.

O’Boyle spent one season at Colorado Mesa in 2012 before joining Southern Illinois in 2013 where he served as the offensive line coach. He was promoted in 2014 to offensive coordinator and then to assistant head coach for the 2015 season.

In three seasons at SIU, O’Boyle helped the Salukis improve in scoring offense and passing offense each season. In 2014, the Salukis set a program record for touchdown passes. After O’Boyle was promoted to assistant coach in 2015, SIU averaged nearly 500 yards of total offense per game, second-best in program history. SIU also set a program record with 298 passing yards per game in 2015.  

O’Boyle is originally from Des Moines, Iowa. He was a two-year starter at Western Illinois where he earned a degree in physical education and studio art. He has a daughter, Cassie.
