A native of Dubuque, Iowa, Michael Runde rejoined the Coyote coaching staff in February of 2016. He previously was USD's graduate assistant in 2013-15.
South Dakota had a historic season in 2022, including its third-straight Summit League tournament title and the Summit League regular season crown. It was the first time that the Coyotes captured both the regular season and tournament titles in the same season.
The 2021 season saw the Coyotes capture a second-straight Summit League tournament title and the team's third NCAA tourney berth in the past four seasons.Â
The 2020 season, despite being pushed back from the fall to the spring due to the COVID-19 pandemic, saw the Coyotes capture the Summit League tournament title and earn their second NCAA tourney berth in the past three seasons.Â
The 2019 season saw the program accomplish a school-record 31 wins, set a Summit League record for winning percentage (.912), win a Summit League regular season title and advance to the title match of the National Invitational Volleyball Championship (NIVC).
The 2018 season was a special one for the Coyotes as the team captured their first-ever Summit League Tournament title and subsequent berth into the NCAA Tournament for the first time at the NCAA Division I level.Â

In his return to campus, Runde led the Coyotes to the program's first regular season conference title in history. The Coyotes finished 25-7 overall and 13-3 in Summit action to capture the 2016 Summit League regular season title. The 2016 season also saw the debut of the Sanford Coyote Sports Center with more than 2,400 fans in attendance at the home opener on August 30. The Coyotes finished 10-1 inside their new home with the only loss coming at the hands of NCAA Tournament participant Iowa State.

Runde began his career as the head coach for the Iowa Rocket’s Volleyball Club in Iowa City from 2009-12. He led the club to three USA Volleyball National Championship appearances. Along with coaching the Rockets, he spent the 2011 and 2012 seasons as a manager for the Iowa Hawkeyes. At Iowa, he graduated with a degree in Sports and Recreation business.

Runde continued his schooling and coaching career at USD. Runde helped coach the team to back-to-back 19-win seasons and helped mentor 2013 Summit League Player of the Year Kendall Kritenbrink. During his tenure, Runde earned his master's degree in sport management.

In his seven seasons with the Coyotes, Runde has coached 21 all-Summit League honorees. One of those includes Brittany Jessen who earned the title of USD all-time assists leader. Jessen ended her career with 4,826 assists, fourth most in Summit League history. Madison Jurgens, a 2022 graduate, closed her career second all-time on the school's assist chart with 4,682 assists, sixth most in Summit League history.

Runde spent the 2015 season at Southeast Missouri where he coached setters, assisted with recruiting, coordinated travel, scouted opponents and assisted with video analysis.
