VERMILLION, S.D. -- THE BLUFFS GC - The South Dakota men's golf team placed three golfers among the top five individuals and recorded a 10-stroke victory at the USD Coyotes Invitational held at The Bluffs GC in Vermillion on April 8-9.
South Dakota team #1 shot a 610 (314-296) to win the tourney. In round two, the Coyotes received a four-under par 68 from Adam Chandler (Vermillion, S.D.) as they shot 18 strokes better than round 1. South Dakota State (319-301) moved from third to second place as they also improved their day two performance by 18 strokes. Augustana finished third with a 626 (316-310). USD #2 was fourth with a 650 (329-321) and Mount Marty was fifth with a 789 (402-387). Every team shot a better round in day 2 than during day one when the conditions were windy.
Talcott (Sioux Falls, S.D.) shot a two-day total of 146 (72-74) to take medallist honors. He finished two strokes ahead of Brian Schultz of SDSU, who had a 148 (76-72). As a result of his second round total of 68, Chandler finished third with a 150 (82-68). Chandler's second round total of 68 was the best round of the tourney. John Burns of Augustana was fourth with a 151 (78-73) while USD #1 team member Jon Sorenson (Beresford, S.D.) had a 154 (80-74) for fifth place.
Other scores for members of USD's #1 included: Chris Knight (Aberdeen, S.D.), tied for 11th, 161 (81-80); and Kent Petersen (Salem, S.D.), tied for 11th, 161 (81-80).
USD #2 was led by Michael Billiet (Graceville, Minn.), who finished 10th, 159 (81-78). Other results included: Derrick Brown (Vermillion, S.D.), tied for 11th, 161 (81-80); Kyle Kelly (Odebolt, Iowa), tied for 17th, 166 (84-82); Scott Beckman (Sioux Falls, S.D.), tied for 20th, 167 (83-84); and Scott Hansen (Coleridge, Neb.), tied for 20th, 167 (86-81).
