VERMILLION, S.D. - Tim Byers and Dan Gay, members of the South Dakota Men's Swimming and Diving Team, have received North Central Conference weekly awards, according to an announcement today (Jan. 28) by the league office.
Gay, a freshman from Fairbury, Neb., was a double winner in helping the South Dakota men's team claim the Get to the Point Invite team title on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 24-25. Gay won the one-meter diving competition by recording 421.55 points and also captured the three-meter diving competition with 469.70 points. Gay also qualified for the NCAA Division II meet in three-meter diving.
Byers, a sophomore from Billings, Mont., was also a double winner while finishing second in one event and serving as a member of a third-place relay at the Get to the Point Invite last weekend. Byers recorded a 1:59.81 in winning the 200 backstroke, in which USD won the top three places. Byers was a member of the victorious 400-medley relay that finished in 3:34.35. In addition, he finished second in the 200 backstroke in 54.82. He also was a member of the third-place 200-freestyle relay squad that had a time of 1:27.07.
The South Dakota men's swimming and diving team scored 1,150 points to easily outdistance second place and host school Wisconsin Stevens-Point (706.5 points).
USD Swimming and Diving has now had 10 athletes earn NCC Swimmer or Diver of the Week honors in 2002-03.
