No. 3 South Dakota Women's BB Team Turns Back Wayne State, 61-49

VERMILLION, S.D. -- Led by 22 points and 18 rebounds from senior All-American Mandy Koupal, No. 3 South Dakota improved to 4-1 with a 61-49 nonconference win over Wayne State (0-2) on Saturday at the DakotaDome.

Before 855 in attendance at the final game of the Coyote Women's Basketball Classic, USD opened up a 27-20 lead and outscored Wayne State, 34-29, in the second half.

Koupal of Wagner, S.D., hit seven of 15 field goals and eight of nine free throws as she recorded her fourth double double this season and 39th in her career. Koupal also had three assists, three steals and a block in a solid perforlance.

Also reaching double figures for South Dakota was sophomore forward Meghan Woster (Sioux Falls, S.D.), who had 13 points, a season-high for the Utah transfer. Woster hit three-of-five three point field goals and also had four rebounds, an assist and a steal. Senior guard Stacy Schooley (Watertown, S.D.) added seven points, seven rebounds, six assists and five steals. Redshirt freshman Vanessa Yanez (Wagner, S.D.) had six points and three rebounds.

For the second straight game, USD struggled shooting from the field. In the first half, USD made just nine-of-33 shots for 27.3 percent and shot just 35.5 percent (22-of-62) for the game. South Dakota hit just four-of-18 three-point field goals for 22.2 percent. Even from the free throw line, the Coyotes were not up to par. The Coyotes, who are making 74.3 percent from the foul line, made just 13-of-21 for 61.9 percent against Wayne State.

Early on, USD gained a 7-2 advantage after Koupal connected on a pair of free throws at the 15:48 mark. Wayne State fought back to take a 10-9 lead on a lay-up by Kristin Humphries with 10:27 left in the half. Once again, the Coyotes built a lead, taking a 25-14 advantage at the 4:41 mark when Koupal again connected from the charity stripe. The Coyotes could not add to the lead as Wayne State fought to within 27-20 on a lay-up by Allison Steffen with six seconds to play in the half.

The Wildcats drew within 33-31 with 15:53 to play in the game when Humphries made a lay-up and converted the three-point play from the foul stripe. South Dakota went on a 8-3 run to gain a 41-34 lead at the 9:54 mark when Schooley made a foul shot. From that point, USD gained control of the game. USD took off on a 11-3 run and took a 52-36 with 5:14 when Erin Bourne (Sauk Rapids, Minn.) made two free throws. South Dakota's largest lead was 18 points (59-41) when Yanez scored inside with 2:03 to play in the game.

Wayne State was led by Steffen with 15 points while Humphries and Ashley Arndorfer had 14 points.

USD won the rebound battle, 42-31.

Next for South Dakota is a trip to the UNO Basketball Classic at Omaha, Neb., on Nov. 28-29. USD will play Moorhead State at 1 p.m. on Nov. 28 and William Penn at 1 p.m. on Nov. 29.
