OMAHA, NEB. -- The third-ranked South Dakota women's basketball team (5-1) erased a 12-point deficit with 10 minutes remaining to squeak out a 56-55 win over Minnesota-Moorhead Friday afternoon at the UNO Classic in Omaha, Neb.
Senior All-American Mandy Koupal (Wagner, S.D.) scored 12 of her game-high 33 points during USD's 18-5 run over the final 10:42 to lift the Coyotes to the victory. Koupal hit 12-of-21 shots from the field, including 3-of-4 from the three-point line. She also added a game-high 12 rebounds.
South Dakota fell behind 34-26 after the first half of play, hitting just 10-of-27 shots from the floor (37.0 percent) and only 2-of-10 from the three-point arc.
Moorhead pushed its lead to as many as 13 points in the second half at 39-26, before South Dakota used a 10-4 run over the next five minutes to cut MSU-Moorhead's lead to seven at 43-36 with 11:50 to go in the game.
The Dragons answered with a 7-2 spurt to push its lead back to 12, before the Coyotes went on its game-winning run.
For the game, USD struggled at the foul line, hitting just 14-of-26 shots from the charity stripe (53.8 percent). From the field, the Coyotes didn't do any better, shooting 35.2 percent from the floor (19-of-54). Moorhead connected on 40.0 percent of its field goals (20-of-50) and 90.9 percent of its foul shots (10-of-11). The Coyotes were outrebounded, 42-29.
Sophomore Meghan Wooster was USD's only other player in double figures with 10 points and six rebounds. Senior Stacy Schooley added six assists, five steals, three points and three rebounds.
Moorhead was led in scoring by Liz Klukas, who had 14 points and 10 rebounds.
USD returns to action Saturday at the UNO Classic with a 1 p.m. contest against William Penn.
