VERMILLION, S.D. -- Sophomore
Jenni Flynn had a double double with 20 points and 12 rebounds to help the South Dakota Women's Basketball Team (6-2) to a 86-48 win over Mount Mercy (5-6) in nonconference basketball at the DakotaDome on Friday night.
Flynn, who also had a double double last year against Mount Mercy (17 points, 11 rebounds), hit 8-of-10 field goals, including 4-of-6 three-point field goals in totaling 20 points in 24 minutes. It was her fourth career double-double. Flynn, originally of South Sioux City, Neb., also tied a career best (St. Cloud State, Feb. 13, 2003) by grabbing 12 rebounds, including five offensive boards. In addition, Flynn had a team-high three steals. Sophomore forward Vanessa Yanez of Wagner, S.D., added 17 points and nine rebounds in 18 minutes of play. Yanez broke out of a shooting slump by hitting 8-of-15 shots from the field. Also reaching double figures was Kristie Tighe (Homer, Neb.), who had 12 points, including 2-of-3 from three-point range. Freshman Janielle Bryan of Bellevue, Neb., had a career best 11 rebounds and also had eight points. Point guard Meghan Woster of Sioux Falls, S.D., contributed 10 assists, six rebounds and six points.
Overall, South Dakota hit 32-of-69 field goals for 46.4 percent. USD also made 12-of-31 three point field goals for 38.7 percent and 10-of-13 free throws for 76.9 percent. USD won the rebounding battle, 56 to 36.
Jenni Baker led Mount Mercy with 14 points. Mount Mercy hit just 16-of-68 field goals for 23.5 percent. They were 6-of-21 from three-point range for 28.6 percent and 10-of-13 from the foul line for 76.9 percent.
South Dakota jumped to a quick 11-2 lead at the 16:49 mark and never looked back. Yanez had four points during the run.
A jumper by Woster increased USD's lead to 17-5 at the 14-minute mark. After Mount Mercy cut the lead to 19-10, the Coyotes used a 10-2 run to increase the lead to 29-12 with 8:57 to play in the half. The Coyotes closed the half on a 26-5 run to take a 55-17 lead into the break.
Both Flynn and Yanez had 15 points in the opening half.
A jumper by Flynn provided USD with a 67-27 lead at the 10:51 mark of the second half. Two free throws by Tighe gave USD a 81-46 lead with 1:43 to play.
The South Dakota women's basketball team will host Northern State on Dec. 18 at 7 p.m. at the DakotaDome.
