GRAND FORKS, N.D. -- Despite two golfers finishing in the top 15,
The University of South Dakota men's golf team was unable to improve on their fifth place standing at the Sioux Invitational at King's Walk Golf Course. The Coyotes completed the two-day invite by finishing in fifth with a score of 614.
USD's Wally Byrne (Sr., Spearfish, S.D.) and Brett Bennett (Jr., Sioux Falls, S.D.) each placed in the top 15 to lead the Coyotes. Byrne tied for 10th as he posted a 151 by shooting 77 on day one and finishing with a 74. Bennett, who after day one was in contention to win the tournament, fell to a tie for 14th after posting a 152. He opened the tournament with a 74, but struggled on day two and shot a 78.
The University of Manitoba won the Sioux Invite as they shot a total team score of 597. UM had three golfers finish in the top five, including Shayne Fredborg who finished in a tie for second. North Dakota's Grant Corbett took home individual honors as he won the event with a two-day total of 144. He posted scores of 72 on both days.
The Coyotes will return to the links on Sunday, September 23 for the Northwest Region Head-to-Head. The two-day event will take place in Hastings, Minn.
