VERMILLION, S.D. -- Led by
Emma Erickson's nation-best performance in the 800-meter run,
The University of South Dakota men's and women's track and field teams won 14 individual or relay titles in a dominating performance by the Coyotes at the Alumni Graphic Edge Meet held at the DakotaDome.
Erickson won the women's 800-meter run in 2:10.29 which is the best time in NCAA Division II in 2008. A freshman from Gayville, S.D., Erickson's clocking set a DakotaDome record and she became just the second athlete in school history to record a time of 2:10 in the 800-meter run. She finished just nine hundredths of a second away from the school record of 2:10.20 that Jennifer Munyan established at the 1997 Indoor Nationals.
During the meet, USD recognized three former student-athletes, who were inducted into the USD Track and Field Hall of Honor on Saturday. The inductees included Chase Anderson of St. Cloud, Minn.; Deb Dodds Duggan of Council Bluffs, Iowa and Dr. Jay Ortman of Canistota, S.D.
Women's Review
Overall, the Coyote women's team took six titles, including two by Ramsey Kavan (So., Yankton, S.D.). Kavan won the women's mile run with a clocking of 5:11.24. She also captured the 1,000-meter run in 3:06.58. USD's Allison Duba (Sioux Falls, S.D.) was fourth in the 1,000-meter run 3:17.30.
Erickson also anchored the Coyotes' 4x400-meter relay to a title in 4:01.95. The squad, which edged out a second USD team, included Allie Smith (Jr., Wahpeton, N.D.), Jenessa Filler (Jr., Crooks, S.D.), Jade Jasinski (So., Rapid City, S.D.) and Erickson. The other USD 4x400-meter relay team, which had a clocking of 4:02.14, included Shaneaka Parkes (Jr., St. Ann, Jamaica), Lauren Krell (Jr., Sioux Falls, S.D.), Sara Miller (Jr., Rapid City, S.D.) and Rosalie Brueske (Jr., Woonsocket, S.D.
Stephanie Gebhart (Sr., Elkton, S.D.) won the women's 400-meter title in 56.95. Overall, USD had three of the top four finishers in the race, including Brueske, who claimed third in 59:13 with Sarah Miller taking fourth in 59:35.
Parkes finished second in the 60-meter dash at 7.90 with Filler taking third in 8.07 and Krell, fourth in 8.09. Parkes was also third in the women's 200-meter dash with a time of 26.12. Overall, the Coyote women's team placed four athletes among the top seven finishers in the 200-meter dash.
In other women's highlights, Tia Haines (So., White Lake, S.D.) was fourth in the women's long jump at 16'08 feet. The Coyote women also placed two in the top three of the women's weight throw. Amy Velthoff (So., Panama, Iowa) was second at 49'02.25 while Danielle Dornbusch (So., Papillion, Neb.) was third at 46'04.25 feet.
Natalie Stout (Jr., Crofton, Neb.) won the women's triple jump title at 37'02.25. Betsy Lubbers (Sr., Watertown, S.D.) finished second in the triple jump at 37'00.25. In addition, Katie Cerling (Sr., Plymouth, Minn.) was third in the women's pole vault at 11'06.
Coyote men's highlights
The Coyote men's team finished with eight titles, including two by Dominic Artis (Jr., Brooklyn Park, Minn.) who dominated the short sprints. Artis claimed a victory in the 60-meter dash in 6.97, finishing ahead of teammate Tim Brown (Rapid City, S.D.), who was third in 7.31. Artis also won the 200-meter dash with a clocking of 22.29.
Senior Scott Hargens (Sioux Falls, S.D.) picked up a title in the 400-meter dash with a season-best clocking of 50.16. He also anchored the 4x400-meter relay to a title in 3:26.21. Other squad members included Ben Oberle (Jr., Vermillion, S.D.), Quincy Christie (So., Pierre, S.D.), and Jeffery.
Senior Terry Liggins (Sr., Omaha, Neb.) won the men's 60-meter hurdles in 8.07. Already this season, Liggins has won three 60-meter titles (Derek Miles Open, Bill Hillenbrand Invitational, Alumni Graphic Edge Invite).
Led by Tyler Wetering (Sr., Sioux Falls, S.D.), the Coyotes claimed three of the top four spots in the men's one-mile run. Wetering had a winning time of 4:20.39 while Sean Fitzsimmons (So., Yankton, S.D.) was third in 4:28.56 and Robert Gregoire (So., Wakonda, S.D.), fourth in 4:28.84.
Josh Jeffery (Sr., Spearfish, S.D.) won the men's 800-meter run in 1:55.54. Also for USD, Fitzsimmons was third (2:41.72) and Gregoire, fourth (2:43.30), in the men's 1,000-meter run.
Preston Scott (So., Parker, S.D.) captured the men's weight throw title in 54'8.55. Ben Walters (Jr., Lennox, S.D.) was third with a throw of 51'37.7. Walters also claimed third in the shot put at 49'07.
In the men's pole vault, Matt Rotert (Sr., Huron, S.D.) was third (14'06) while Tane Owens (So., Pierre, S.D.) was fourth at 14'06.
Next on the schedule, the Coyotes will travel to compete at the Frank Sevigne Husker Invite on Feb. 1-2 in Lincoln, Neb.
