Coyotes win two events, lead men’s standings after opening day of Summit League Championships

FARGO, N.D. ­— South Dakota track and field won two of the six events that were scored during Thursday's competition at the Summit League Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Fargo, North Dakota.
 
TOP PERFORMERS
• South Dakota's highlight of day came in the men's pole vault competition, where five of the top six finishers were from Vermillion.
Caelan Harland won the pole vault in 17-10 ¼ (5.44m), followed by teammate Beau Karst (17-6 ¼). Dutch Neuweiler jumped a PR 17-2 ¼ (5.24m) to share third place. Wyatt Stewart placed fifth at that same height and Dylan Curtis took sixth at 16-8 ¼ (5.09m).
• South Dakota other Summit League Champion came in the women's hammer throw, where Delaney Smith threw 195-5 for the title. Smith fouled on her first two throws and was fifth entering the finals before her fifth round throw that put her on top.
Quincy Warren added a second place finish in the men's hammer throw, recording a best throw of 194-11.
Piercze Marshall was one of the surprise names near the top of the leaderboards Thursday, running 31:18.62 in the men's 10,000-meters to place second.
• In the lone track final of Thursday's competition on the women's side, Geneva Timmerman took sixth in the women's 10,000-meters (36:29.21).
• Four Coyotes advanced to finals in their respective track events, led by Ethan Baessler's third best time of 21.06 in the 200. That time is a personal best that ranks sixth on the USD Top 10.
Bre Dunn ran the second-best prelim time in the women's 400-meter hurdles, running 59.57. Dunn will be joined by Avery Winter in the finals.
• The final men's qualifier is Jaden Damiano, who ran a personal best 54.04 to take the final qualifying spot in the men's 400-meter hurdles.
