VERMILLION, S.D. - - The University of South Dakota women's basketball team had four players score in double figures on its way to a 71-61 win over Nebraska-Kearney in action Tuesday night in Vermillion, S.D.
The Coyotes (10-2) rebounded from Monday's loss to Concordia-St. Paul with a strong, balanced attack in Tuesday's win over UNK.
Bridget Yoerger (Sr., Hinton, Iowa) paced the Coyotes with 19 points, eight rebounds, four steals and five assists, which tied a career-high. Jasmine Mosley (Jr., Bellevue, Neb.) had a career-high 16 points and six assists for the Coyotes, while Ashley Wiemann (Sr., Vermillion, S.D.) had 11 points and Maggie Youngberg (Sr., Yankton, S.D.) had 10.
USD broke open a close game with a 14-2 run in the second half. The Lopers (7-5) had taken a 41-40 lead with 12:48 left before the Coyotes went on the 14-2 run to take a 54-43 lead. Three-point plays by Kendra Schomer (So., Madison, Neb.) and Mosley keyed the USD run. From there, USD built its lead to as many as 13 in the second half. USD shot 46.2 percent in the second half.
The first half was competitive, with neither team holding more than a five-point lead. The Coyotes led 5-0 early, but the Lopers battled back and eventually held a 22-17 advantage.
The Coyotes then went on an 11-1 run, keyed by four points from Mosley, three from Wiemann and two each from Yoerger and Youngberg, to take a 28-23 advantage.
The Lopers scored the final four points of the half to leave the Coyotes with a 28-27 halftime lead.
USD was led by nine points by Wiemann in the first half. Mosley had six. The Coyotes shot 11-of-26 (42.3 percent) from the field in the first half. The Lopers were held to just 11-of-32 shooting (34.4 percent) in the first half. Youngberg had three steals in the first half while Mosley had three assists.
Schomer added five points off the bench for USD. Annie Roche (RFr., Vermillion, S.D.) added six points and three assists.
The Coyotes resume action on Friday, Jan. 2, at the Colorado School of Mines. Game time is 3 p.m. Central time in Golden, Colo.
Notes: USD has won 10 of 11 games...both the Coyotes and Nebraska-Kearney were participants in the North Central Region Division II tournament in 2008. The Coyotes beat the Lopers, 59-48 in the region semifinals...USD had a 21-9 edge in points scored off of turnovers.
