LAWRENCE, Kan. -- Junior Amber Hegge had 13 points and six rebounds, but
the South Dakota women's basketball team suffered a 73-40 loss to Kansas Sunday afternoon in Lawrence, Kan.
Hegge (Crofton, Neb.) was 4-of-13 from the field and 5-of-6 from the free-throw line. Sophomore Alexis Yackley (Onida, S.D.) added eight points, while junior Jodie Boss (Columbus, Neb.) added four points, two assists and five blocks.
The Coyotes (1-1) struggled shooting the ball all game, hitting just 13-of-60 (21.7 percent) field goal attempts, including only 5-of-29 (17.2 percent) in the first half. Kansas (1-0) shot 45.5 percent for the game.
South Dakota never led in the game against their foes from the Big 12 Conference. The Jayhawks built an early 20-6 lead on their way to a 34-16 halftime advantage.
The Coyotes closed within 36-21 early in the second half when sophomore Tempestt Wilson (Elk River, Minn.) drained a three-pointer, but the Jayhawks answered with an 8-0 run over the next 3:29 to push the lead to 44-21, and the Coyotes were unable to make a big dent in the lead after that.
Wilson added five points for South Dakota, while junior Annie Roche (Vermillion, S.D.) had four points and a career-high two blocks.
Freshman Katelyn Edwards (Crete, Neb.) had two steals for South Dakota.
