Box Score IOWA CITY, Iowa - - The South Dakota women's soccer team ran into its toughest foe of the 2011 season and fell to Big Ten Conference opponent Iowa, 5-0, Sunday in a nonconference contest in Iowa City.
Iowa (7-0) is ranked just outside the top 25 in the NSCAA National Rankings. The Hawkeyes built a 2-0 lead at halftime and added three more goals in the second half on their way to the win.
"It was a great learning experience for us," South Dakota head coach Mandy Green said. "They gave us a good example of how fast and how physical we should be playing and how to play with urgency. At this point in the season, it was great for us to play against a team like Iowa that did all of those things really well."
The Coyotes (0-4-2) finished with four shots in the game, including three on goal. Junior Erin Bello (Fort Collins, Colo.) led the way with three shots, including two on goal, while sophomore Jenny Teslow (Sioux Falls, S.D.) had one shot on goal.
"We knocked it around pretty well at times; we didn't show it consistently enough," Green said.
Freshman goalkeeper Mackenzie Viktor (Fort Collins, Colo.) had seven saves in 56:56 of action, while freshman Kayla Wegman (Omaha, Neb.) made her collegiate debut and finished the final 33 minutes and recorded three saves.
South Dakota's next action is against Boise State on Friday, Sept. 16 in Omaha, Neb. The game, which will be played at Creighton University, begins at 4:30 p.m. and is the second of fourth straight road contests for the Coyotes.
