Rachel Greene and sophomore
Jenny Teslow each scored goals, but the South Dakota women's soccer team fell short against Northern Colorado on Sunday, dropping a 4-2 nonconference contest in Greeley, Colo.
It was the first goal of the season for Greene (Onalaska, Wis.), while Teslow (Sioux Falls, S.D.) scored her team-best third goal of the 2011 campaign. Freshman Lauren Bennett (Walton, Ky.) added an assist, while freshman Mackenzie Viktor (Fort Collins, Colo.) had seven saves in net.
The game was a see-saw battle early, with five goals being scored in the first 27:40 by the two teams. After Northern Colorado scored on a penalty kick to make it 1-0, Greene found the back of the net at the 3:53 mark to tie the game at 1-1.
Northern Colorado scored at the 10:24 mark to regain the lead at 2-1, but the Coyotes answered again at the 25:54 mark, as Teslow scored with an assist from Bennett to tie the game at 2-2.
The Bears added a goal less than two minutes later to push the lead to 3-2, which was the score at halftime.
The score stayed at 3-2 until there was less than four minutes left in regulation when Northern Colorado added a goal to make the score 4-2.
Teslow led the way with two shots on goal, while junior Erin Bello (Fort Collins, Colo.) added two shots, including one on goal. Sophomore Afton Keiser (Sioux Falls, S.D.) added a shot on goal.
South Dakota returns home to make its Summit League debut this week. The Coyotes will face Western Illinois at 4 p.m. on Friday and Indiana University-Purdue University-Indianapolis on Sunday at 1 p.m. Both games will be at the USD Soccer Field.
