AUSTIN, Texas - Junior
Alexa Duling set a new school record in the 400-meter hurdles to lead the South Dakota track and field teams at the Texas Relays, which are being held at Mike A. Myers Stadium on the University of Texas Campus.
Duling (Gregory, S.D.) ran a time of 59.92 in the preliminaries Thursday to set a new record, breaking the mark of 1:00.15 she set in 2011. Duling's time was 11th-fastest out of 60 runners in the preliminaries - ahead of runners from Texas, Florida, Mississippi State, Duke, Stanford and Pittsburgh - and was just .35 seconds out of qualifying for the finals.
Junior Kyle Ballew (West Hills, Calif.) had a strong showing in the men's pole vault Section B, taking third with an effort of 17-0 3/4. That mark, the best of the outdoor season so far for Ballew, was ahead of competitors from Louisiana State, Oral Roberts, Duke and Ohio State.
The Texas Relays, which feature more than 6,500 athletes, resume Friday.
