Vermillion, S.D. -- South Dakota sophomore quarterback Kevin Earl has been named the Coyote Athlete of the Week for the period ending Oct. 20. The honor comes after Earl led the Coyotes to a 38-31 double-overtime win against 13th-ranked Northern Iowa Saturday at the UNI-Dome.
Earl passed for a career-high 370 yards against the Panthers while accounting for five touchdowns (3 passing, 2 rushing). The passing yards are the most recorded by a USD quarterback in four seasons.
With five seconds left in regulation, Earl managed to send Coyote fans jumping for joy as his 3-yard touchdown pass was caught in the end zone by Terrance Terry, forcing overtime. He then gave the Coyotes their first lead of the game during the second overtime with a one yard quarterback sneak that gave USD a 38-31 lead.
The win put Earl at 3-0 as starting quarterback for the Coyotes. All three victories have required fourth-quarter comebacks.
Earl is a Lincolnshire, Ill., native and a business major.
