Final Stats
KISSIMMEE, Fla.â€"South Dakota defeated Sacred Heart 12-0 (6 inn.) and suffered a 5-1 setback at the hands of Akron at the Osceola County Softball Complex on the final day of the Rebel Springs Games. Lindsey Boyd now has a 14-game hit streak and has scored a run in 13 straight games.
Matley Jones led the Coyotes (16-10) with four RBIs on two hits, including a triple and a home run, while Yvon Minogue had five hits in seven at bats to improve her batting average to .418. All nine Coyotes who batted against Sacred Heart (5-8) had a hit and scored a run in the win.
Madison Frain (4-5) pitched all six innings to earn the shutout against Sacred Heart, striking out seven batters while allowing three hits and one walk.
Erica Denney (9-4) went the distance against Akron (8-6), allowing seven hits and walking two. The loss ended a streak of six consecutive starts with wins for Denney.
The Coyotes scored 11 runs in the bottom of the sixth inning against Sacred Heart with all nine batters scored a run. Katie Dinning led off the inning with a walk and was followed by four consecutive singles before Jones struck a bases loaded triple down the right field line to push the 'Yotes lead to 6-1.
Three batters later, with Kate Snow on second base and Katelyn Wudel on first, Boyd singled to score Snow, and Wudel and Boyd each moved up one base on an overthrow by the Pioneer shortstop. After Wudel scored on a passed ball Dinning singled, scoring Boyd and pushing the lead to 10-0. Minogue then doubled and Daly walked, loading the bases. Morgan Hancock hit into a fielder's choice, with the shortstop throwing to third to record the first out of the inning and Dinning scored on the play. USD scored its final run of the game three batters later on Snow's single to left field with the bases loaded.
USD scored its first run of the game in the second inning on Jones' solo shot with two outs. It was Jones' second home run of the season.
South Dakota entered the seventh inning tied 1-1 with Akron, but a Grand Slam from Zips third baseman Shawna Hochstettler gave Akron a 5-1 lead that ended up being the game's final score.
USD scored its lone run of the game in the bottom of the first inning. Boyd opened the game with a single, stole second, advanced to third base on Dinning's grounder to the pitcher and scored on a single from Minogue.
The 'Yotes open league play with a double-header at Western Illinois starting at 3 p.m. on Friday and a third game at noon on Saturday.
