VERMILLION, S.D.—South Dakota got goals from four different players in a 4-1 win against College of St. Mary Sunday afternoon at USD Soccer Complex. It was the first home game for the Coyotes (4-2-2) since Aug. 25.
South Dakota led 2-1 at halftime and scored twice in the first five minutes of the second half to hand the Flames (5-2) their second loss of the season. An NAIA team out of Omaha, Neb., the Flames were averaging three goals and 26 shots per game. The Coyotes permitted four shots on goal Sunday.
USD sophomore Danielle Anderson scored in the first five minutes of the contest and then assisted on the Coyotes' next two goals. Freshman Jamie Karch gave USD a 2-1 lead with her team-leading fourth goal of the season in the 19th minute. USD had just two shots on goal in the first half, but both reached the back of the net.
Senior Jenny Teslow's 19th collegiate goal made it 3-1 less than two minutes into the second half. Junior Shannon Keller made it 4-1 less than three minutes later with her first collegiate goal. Both scores came after the Coyotes had hit the crossbar with shots in the moments preceding the goals. Junior midfielder Kylee Willer played a perfect ball into the box and to Keller who finished the play.
Sophomore goalkeeper Mackenzie Viktor (4-2-2) made three saves for the Coyotes before exiting in the 59th minute with the three-goal lead. Junior Jen Shaefer took over and helped keep the Flames scoreless in the final 31 minutes.
The Coyotes return to the pitch at 3 p.m. Friday (Sept. 20) against North Dakota in Grand Forks, N.D.
