VERMILLION, S.D.--Two second-half goals by freshman Lara Boman and a penalty kick by freshman Maddie Vang led South Dakota to a 3-0 victory over Northern State in the Coyotes' season opener Friday at the USD Sports Complex.

Vang broke a scoreless tie with her penalty kick in the 52nd minute. She drove inside the box, faked out Northern State goalkeeper Brittany Tietz and was tripped by Tietz as a last line of defense. Vang completed the goal by knocking the ball into the bottom left corner of the net.

In the 73rd minute, junior Taylor Nivala crossed the ball from the right side of the field to meet Boman in the box. Boman cut the ball left of the defender, shot and scored. Five minutes later, the Coyotes returned to the box as junior Teagan Eberle's shot hit the cross bar, bouncing back towards Boman who sent the ball to the back of the net to make the score 3-0.

Boman is the first Coyote to score two goals in a game since Jenny Teslow in 2012.

South Dakota out-shot Northern State, 13-8, but the Wolves had one shot on goal to the Coyotes' five.

Junior Mackenzie Viktor returned to goal for the Coyotes' season opener after sitting out of the exhibition win against Viterbo last weekend. Viktor recorded one save during the match.

Today's game served as an exhibition game for Northern State, a Division II program from Aberdeen, S.D. The Wolves finished 8-8-2 a year ago.

The Coyotes return to USD Soccer Complex on Sunday at 1 p.m. against College of Saint Mary.
