FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - South Dakota volleyball was swept by Southern Methodist University (25-21, 25-21, 25-16), but bounced back to top Stony Brook in four sets (25-15, 24-26, 25-23, 25-22) on Saturday as they wrapped up play at the Razorback Invitational held at Barnhill Arena. The tournament was hosted by Arkansas.
The Coyotes (4-5) finished 2-1 at the tournament after beating Arkansas in five sets on Friday night. SMU (8-1) took the tournament title by going 3-0.
Outside hitters Kendall Kritenbrink and Sydney Dimke were both named to the all-tournament team. Kritenbrink finished the tournament with 57 kills and 35 digs while Dimke tallied 28 kills and seven total blocks.
South Dakota couldn't contain SMU's attack in their first match of the day as three Mustangs recorded double-digit kills. Janelle Giordano led the way with 11 kills while Caroline Young and Cailin Bula both recorded 10 kills. SMU tallied more kills than USD in every set of the match (17-9, 18-15, 15-8).
Three separate Mustangs also recorded double-digit digs as Morgan Heise led the way with 16 and Abbey Bybel and Avery Acker both added 11.
Kritenbrink tallied the most kills in the match with 14, but was the only Coyote to record more than six kills. Riley Haug tallied 12 digs to lead USD in that stat while Brittany Jessen finished with 26 assists.
South Dakota rebounded to top Stony Brook (4-7) in four sets behind 24 kills and 10 digs from Kritenbrink. Dimke added 12 kills and Jessen had 41 assists to aid the USD offense. Three more Coyotes reached double-digit dig totals with Audrey Reeg's 18 being the most while Lindsey Brown added five block assists.
Evann Slaughter led the Seawolves attack with 13 kills while Emily Costello was the lead defender with 17 digs.
The Coyotes put pressure on the Seawolves' offense in the match, recording 10 blocks and forcing SBU into 32 attack errors. South Dakota had more than 12 kills in every set and was out-killed only in the second set (17-12).
South Dakota will travel to Omaha, Neb., for the Creighton Classic next weekend. They will face Colorado on Friday at 4:30 p.m. before taking on Illinois and tournament host Creighton on Saturday.
