Coyotes sweep Bison

VERMILLION, S.D. — Senior Kelsey Biltoft and juniors Audrey Reeg and Haley Jorgensen each had double-digit kills as the Coyotes (11-13, 5-6) swept the North Dakota State Bison (15-11, 6-6 SL) 25-23, 25-23, 25-16 Saturday night in the Coyote Den.

"We started out the match fairly similar to the way we played yesterday," said South Dakota head coach Leanne Williamson. "The team wanted to overcome that and made the decision to stop being the team that was chasing.

"We got disciplined and put them into a lot of chaos. That allowed our defense to set up early and play controlled into our offense. Our servers stepped up and put a lot of pressure on them."

Sophomore setter Brittany Jessen kept the offense going throughout the match and had a match-high 42 assists. Jessen also had seven kills, eight digs, and three service aces.

Reeg led the Coyotes with 13 kills while Biltoft and Jorgensen added 12 and 11, respectively. Biltoft had an attack percentage of .474 and Jorgensen hit .556.

Freshman libero Lauren Mattison led the defense with 18 kills. Fellow classmate Hayley Dotseth and senior Kaitlyn Hastings added 14 apiece.

In set one the Bison jumped out early on the Coyotes and lead for most of the set. With North Dakota State up 21-14, the Coyotes went on a 5-2 run with two kills from Jessen and one apiece from Biltoft and Reeg. The lead was down to four, 23-19, and then South Dakota took control of the set. With Jessen serving, the Coyotes scored six straight points. Jessen recorded two service aces during the run. Biltoft and Reeg combined for a block assist on the final point as the Coyotes completed the comeback to take the set.

The second set started the same as the first, with the Bison leading early and often. The Coyotes were down 13-9, but went on an 8-1 run and took the lead, 17-14. Junior Lindsey brown recorded a service ace and Reeg swatted down three kills during the stretch as North Dakota State took a timeout. The Bison bounced back after the timeout and set two was tied at 23. A kill from Biltoft and service ace from Jessen closed out set two and the Coyotes took a 2-0 match lead.

With set three tied at 10, back-to-back kills from Reeg and Jorgensen put the Coyotes in the driving seat. The Coyotes increased the lead to 18-13 and then Jorgensen recorded three straight kills as the Coyotes coasted to a sweep of North Dakota State.

"Haley Jorgensen bounced back extremely well today and had a fantastic match," said Williamson. "She balanced out our offense and helped open our middles up in transition."

The Coyotes return to the court on Tuesday and host Denver at 7 p.m. in the Coyote Den.
