Coyotes fall short against Jaguars

Indianapolis, Ind. — IUPUI's Skylar Wright and Kaitlyn Hickey record double-doubles in kills and digs as the Jaguars (20-9, 11-4 SL) slipped by the South Dakota Coyotes (13-15, 7-8) 23-25, 25-19, 25-17, 24-26, 15-12 Friday night in The Jungle.

"Tonight was a tough loss," said South Dakota head coach Leanne Williamson. "I thought we fought really hard and made them earn the majority of their points. We served really aggressively throughout the match which is a positive to build on."

Wright led the Jags with 22 kills and added 10 digs. Hickey had 18 kills, 17 digs, and two service aces.

Logan Walling swatted down 15 kills with a .591 hitting percentage, Alexis Mapes had 40 assists, and Courtney Halter had 26 digs.

South Dakota had three Coyotes with double-doubles. Junior Audrey Reeg led the offensive attack with 18 kills to go with 15 digs and freshman Hayley Dotseth had 16 kills and 18 digs. Sophomore setter Brittany Jessen had a match-high 55 assists, 13 digs, and 7 kills.

The Jags started the first set on a 4-0 run. A kill by senior Kelsey Biltoft and back-to-back kills by Dotseth tied the set at 5. The set was tied up again at 19. A service ace by junior Lindsey brown and a kill by Dotseth put South Dakota up 21-19 and IUPUI called a timeout. Brown swatted down the final point as the Coyotes took set one 25-23.

With set two tied at 10, two Coyote errors and a kill by IUPUI's Kori Waelbroeck put the Jags up 13-10. South Dakota fought back and cut the Jags lead to one. IUPUI was up 20-19 and got back-to-back kills from Waelbroeck and Wright to make it 22-19. Wright also had the final two kills to win set two for IUPUI 25-19. The
Jags kept the offense going in the third set and jumped out to a 7-2 lead and never looked back. IUPUI won the third set 25-17.

In the fourth set, the Coyotes took a 12-8 lead as Brown, Jessen, and Reeg recorded three straight kills. The Jags eventually fought back and cut the lead to one, 21-20, and the Coyotes called a timeout. Reeg and Dotseth swatted down back-to-back kills coming out of the timeout to increase the Coyotes lead to 23-20. With the set tied at 24, two errors by the Jags won the set for the Coyotes and the match went to a fifth and final set.

The fifth set was tied nine times. With the score tied at nine, Biltoft and Reeg each had a kill to put the Coyotes up 11-9. After a kill by IUPUI's Walling and a block assist by Wright and Abby Boatman the set was tied at 12. Boatman put the final touches on the set with a solo block. The Jags won the fifth set 15-12 and the match 3-2.

"At this point of the season, we need to build upon the positives and make small adjustments to give ourselves the best chance at success," said Williamson. "I'm glad that we get to compete right away tomorrow against another good team."

South Dakota is back in action Saturday night in its season finale against Fort Wayne at 6 p.m.
