MACOMB, Ill. — South Dakota junior
Audrey Reeg recorded a double-double in kills and digs as the Coyotes (12-14, 6-7 SL) swept the Western Illinois Leathernecks (3-25, 1-12 SL) 25-23, 25-23, 25-18 Friday in Western Hall.
Reeg led the Coyotes with 10 kills and added 12 digs. This is Reeg's 14
th double-double of the season.
Sophomore setter
Brittany Jessen kept the offense going with a match-high 29 assists, giving her 1,008 on the season. She also added four service aces, six kills, and six digs.
Defensively, Senior
Kelsey Biltoft had two solo blocks and four block assists while freshman libero
Lauren Mattison protected the backline with a match-high 16 digs.
"Brittany did a good job for us all around," said South Dakota head coach
Leanne Williamson. "She found a way to contribute in multiple areas of the game. Her attacks open up other hitters, which makes us more difficult to defend."
The Coyotes started set one off very strong. Biltoft and Reeg had back-to-back kills and then Jessen had back-to-back service aces. Another kill from Reeg and an error on the Leathernecks had the Coyotes up 6-0. Western Illinois fought back and tied up the set at 14, and the set would be tied up five more times. With the score even at 23, Western Illinois committed an error and Reeg put the Leathernecks away with a kill.
In set two, the Coyotes started strong again as Biltoft scored the first point with a solo block. Jessen had a service ace and Reeg swatted down a kill and South Dakota led 3-0. Western Illinois answered and tied the set at 12. The teams would exchange points back and forth and the score was again tied at 23. Coming out of a South Dakota timeout, junior
Haley Jorgensen swatted down a kill as the Coyotes went on to win set two and take a 2-0 lead in the match.
With set three tied at 8, the Coyotes scored four straight. Freshman
Hayley Dotseth and Jessen each had a kill during the run as South Dakota took the lead and never looked back. The Coyotes coasted the rest of the way to win the set and the match.
"Our serving in game three made it much easier to defend which ultimately propelled us forward," said Williamson. "We are looking forward to getting home and working on a few things before welcoming SDSU on Sunday."
South Dakota returns home and hosts South Dakota State for Senior Day. The match is on Sunday and starts at 2 p.m.
