VERMILLION, S.D.—Senior outside hitter Peyton Crosser had 20 kills and junior Reilly Dunne added 16 more to lead Western Illinois to a five-set victory against South Dakota Friday at The Den in the Summit League opener for both teams. Scores went 32-30, 29-27, 10-25, 13-15 and 15-11.
Crosser added 16 digs for her second double-double of the season. The win was the third of the season for the Leathernecks (3-12), who ended a three-game skid. The Coyotes (6-8) lost at home for just the third time in their last 21 games.
Junior Audrey Reeg posted a career-high 24 kills to lead South Dakota. She hit .357 during the match with four errors in 56 attempts. With 14 digs, Reeg earned her fifth double-double in the last six matches.
"That was a tale of two teams," said South Dakota head coach Leanne Williamson. "We played scared in sets one and two, which allowed them to gain a lot of confidence. In sets three and four, we played our style of volleyball and didn't give them anything. We hoped things would go our way in set five, but they earned it."
Western fought off four match points to take set one and fought back from a 22-18 deficit to win set two. South Dakota scored eight of the first nine points in set three and rattled off the final eight points to win set four.
Crosser and Dunne had two kills each in set five. Crosser and Sierra Bauder combined on the block for match point. The Leathernecks scored seven of the final points after trailing briefly at 9-8.
Both setters kept busy. South Dakota's Brittany Jessen tied her career high of 59 assists. She added eight digs, four kills and two blocks. Abby Skryd, a freshman, had a season-high 54 assists and nine digs for Western Illinois.
Coyote senior Sydney Dimke posted her second consecutive double-double with 15 kills and 14 digs. Teammate Kelsey Biltoft added 11 kills and seven blocks.
South Dakota is back in action at 5 p.m. Saturday against Omaha. It's the first of three consecutive road trips for the Coyotes.
