First-place Mavs down Coyotes

MBB: UNO 96, USD 83

OMAHA, Neb.—Omaha seniors Devin Patterson and Jake White scored 26 and 24 points, respectively, to lead the Mavericks to a 96-83 win against South Dakota Saturday at Baxter Arena.

Omaha's win completed the first regular season sweep of the series since the old NCC rivals became Summit League foes four years ago. The Mavericks (15-8, 7-2 Summit), who have won nine of their last 11, remain in a first-place tie atop the Summit League standings with South Dakota State.

The Coyotes (10-13, 2-7) got 14 points off the bench from both Tyler Flack and Shy McClelland, but lost their third in a row. USD also lost for the first time this season when scoring at least 80 points (6-1). South Dakota returns to Vermillion and will host Fort Wayne Thursday inside the DakotaDome.

Omaha, which has made the most free throws in the nation, made 28 of 32 from the charity stripe Saturday. White made 12 of 15 while Patterson made good on all seven tries. The two also combined to make 15 of 28 shots from the field.

South Dakota made 21 of 27 free throws, but made just two triples for the second time in three days. Casey Kasperbauer, the Coyotes' leading scorer entering the game, was held without a 3 for just the second time all season and finished with five points.

Omaha trailed 39-33 with less than two minutes to go in the first half, but coverted three three-point plays during an 11-2 run to take a 44-41 lead into halftime. White and Peterson had all 11 points during the rally.

D.J. Davis had 12 points in the first half for South Dakota, but also picked up three fouls. He picked up his fourth foul during the first minute of the second half and fouled out with 10 minutes to go. He played 12 minutes.

Omaha's second run started with 14 minutes to go after a layup by Trey Norris got the Coyotes within a point at 57-56. A technical foul following a scramble for a rebound gave Omaha two free throws and Randy Reed converted a three-point play for a five-point possession. The Mavericks added seven more unanswered points to take a 69-56 lead with 12 minutes left and led by double-digits the rest of the way.

Tre'Shawn Thurman had 12 points and 10 rebounds for Omaha. Tre Burnette scored eight points and had 10 boards for South Dakota. Eric Robertson was also in double figures for USD. He made 5 of 6 shots and scored 12 points.
