VERMILLION, S.D.—Fort Wayne senior guard Max Landis hit a school-record 11 three-pointers and scored a school-record 44 points to lead the Mastodons to a 95-82 win against South Dakota Thursday inside the DakotaDome.
The Mastodons (19-6, 8-2 Summit), one of the top 3-point shooting teams in the nation, hit a school-record 20 of them on 36 attempts to remain atop the Summit League standings. The Coyotes (10-14, 2-8) have lost four in a row with a home game against Oral Roberts next on Saturday.
Landis, who had hit nine triples in a game twice this season, made 11 of 15 from downtown Thursday. He made 15 of 21 shots on the night and was 3 of 5 from the free-throw line. His previous career-high for points was 37 which he earned against Omaha less than three weeks ago.
Tyler Flack earned his first start since the 2013-14 season and scored 17 points with seven rebounds for South Dakota. Senior guard
Trey Norris had 16 points in his third start of the season. Senior forward
Tre Burnette scored nine points in the final two minutes and led the Coyotes with 18.
Landis had six triples and 24 points in the first half as Fort Wayne took a 46-40 lead into halftime. South Dakota hit 2 of 12 from long range in the opening stanza, but still shot 48 percent in the half and committed just two turnovers. Flack didn't miss a shot in the first half and had 11 points.
An alley-oop dunk by Flack off a set play opened the second half and cut Fort Wayne's lead to 46-42, but that was as close as the Coyotes would get the rest of the way.
Landis' ninth 3-pointer and 36
th point gave Fort Wayne its largest lead at 80-58 with 5:10 to go. His final bucket came on a 3 with 1:53 remaining that made it 93-71.
In addition to Landis for Fort Wayne, DeAngelo Stewart made five triples and scored a season-high 17 points, Michael Calder had three treys and 14 points, and John Konchar added 13 points and 10 assists.
