Iowa State snaps Coyotes' win streak

VB: ISU 3, USD 0

VERMILLION, S.D.—Alexis Conway and Samara West had 10 kills apiece in leading Iowa State past South Dakota Tuesday in non-conference play at Sanford Coyote Sports Center. Scores were 25-11, 25-12 and 25-21.

The win ended a two-game skid for the Cyclones (9-8), who were coming off last week's losses to sixth-ranked Kansas and fourth-ranked Texas. South Dakota (17-3) lost for the first time in its new facility and saw its six-game win streak come to an end.

Iowa State led 9-3 in each of the first two sets and maintained control throughout. Conway had five kills on six attempts in set one when the Cyclones hit .471. West led Iowa State with four kills in set two.

The Coyotes' best rally occurred in set three when they rattled off six straight points to take a 15-13 lead. South Dakota earned both of its blocks during the run and setter Brittany Jessen recorded one of her three kills. Jessen also had 20 assists and eight digs.

Iowa State regained the lead at 20-19 on West's ninth kill of the night. Ciara Capezio's second service ace followed for the Cyclones, which had four aces in all.

An ace by Coyote defensive specialist Anne Rasmussen tied game three for the seventh time. But Iowa State scored the final four points to get the sweep. West had the kill on match point.

Rachel Schmidt had seven kills to lead South Dakota, which hit a season-low .070. It was just the third time the Coyotes had hit less than .200 all season. Audrey Reeg finished with five kills and led USD with 12 digs. Libero Lauren Mattison had 10 digs.

Iowa State hit .319 for the match and had eight blocks. Conway had four assisted blocks to go with seven digs. Jess Schaben's line read 10 digs, eight kills and three block assists.

South Dakota, which sits atop the Summit League standings at 6-0, begins a three-game road trip Friday against Omaha (4-16, 1-5).
