Coyotes win fifth-straight match

VB: USD 3, IUPUI 0

VERMILLION, S.D. — The South Dakota volleyball team won its fifth-straight match as senior outside hitter Audrey Reeg, redshirt-sophomore outside hitter Rachel Schmidt and freshman outside hitter Elizabeth Loschen each recorded double-digit kills as the Coyotes swept IUPUI 25-18, 25-22, 25-12 Friday in the Sanford Coyote Sports Center in front of a crowd of 1,013. The match was the first of two for the Coyotes on this Dakota Days weekend.

South Dakota is now 16-2 on the season and 5-0 in Summit League play. The Coyotes have swept all five Summit opponents and 11 teams overall. With the loss, IUPUI is 6-14 and 2-3 in the Summit.

"It felt great to get a win in front of another great crowd," said South Dakota head volleyball coach Leanne Williamson. "Our players were excited to be home and to be a part of Dakota Days."

Reeg led the Coyotes with a match-high 19 kills. She added 12 digs to record her ninth double-double of the season. Schmidt and Loschen swatted down 15 and 11 kills, respectively. Schmidt had a hitting percentage of .481.

Junior setter Brittany Jessen kept the Coyote offense going with 47 assists. She added 15 digs for her sixth double-double of the year. Her 47 assists are tied for fifth-most on the Coyotes' all-time list for most assists in three sets.

Sophomore libero Lauren Mattison helped protect the backline with a match-high 20 digs. Freshman defensive specialist Anne Rasmussen and sophomore outside hitter Hayley Dotseth added 12 and 10, respectively. The Coyotes tallied 76 kills as a team.

"Our outsides continue to lead our offense," said Williamson. "Brittany did a great job putting our hitters in great situations. In between sets two and three we knew we needed to make a change with our serving. I am extremely pleased with the change we made in set three. Our serving went up a level and it allowed us to finish it off in three sets."

Set one was tied at 12 before the Coyotes scored four straight points to take the lead. During the run, Schmidt tallied a kill and combined with senior middle blocker Lindsey Brown on a block. The Coyotes carried that momentum throughout the rest of the set and won 25-18.

Set two was tied a total of nine times and eventually was all knotted up at 21. Loschen tallied a kill with an assist from Jessen as the Coyotes took the lead and went on to win the second set 25-22. USD started out set three on a 7-0 run and never looked back as the Coyotes won the third set 25-12 and the match 3-0.

The Coyotes continue their Dakota Days home stand as Fort Wayne comes to town. The game starts at 6 p.m. on Saturday in the Sanford Coyote Sports Center.
