FARGO, N.D. — North Dakota State's Emily Minnick, Hadley Steffen and Emily Miron each tallied 14-plus kills as the Bison snapped the Coyotes' three-match winning streak with a final score of 3-1 (19-25, 25-15, 25-22, 29-27) Tuesday night in the Bentson Bunker.
South Dakota drops to 21-5 and 10-2 in Summit League play. USD is tied with Denver for the top spot in the Summit with four games remaining. North Dakota State improves to 10-16 and 8-4.
Senior
Audrey Reeg led the Coyotes with a match-high 21 kills. She recorded her 14
th double-double of the season in kills and digs as she totaled 18 digs. Senior middle blocker
Lindsey Brown added 10 kills with a .529 clip.
Junior setter
Brittany Jessen tallied 46 assists and 16 digs for her 11
th double-double of the season. She added four kills, one service ace and one solo block.
Sophomore libero
Lauren Mattison had a career-high 31 digs. Sophomore
Hayley Dotseth made it four Coyotes with double-digit digs and added 14 more. Mattison and Dotseth each recorded two service aces.
In the first set, South Dakota used two 4-0 runs to build a 14-10 lead. Brown had two kills during the first run and Reeg added one. During the second run, Dotseth swatted down two kills and Jessen had one. The Bison fought back and cut the lead to two at 18-16. South Dakota finished the set on a 7-3 run and took the first set with a final score of 25-19. Dotseth and Reeg tallied two kills during the run. Jessen added a kill and an ace and redshirt sophomore
Rachel Schmidt had one kill.
NDSU bounced back and won the second set 25-15 to tie the match at one set apiece. Set three had a total of 16 ties and 10 lead changes. Just when the Coyotes took a lead, the Bison would bounce back, and vice-versa. The score was tied at 21 when NDSU went on a 4-1 run to end the set at 25-22 and took a 2-1 lead in the match.
Set four was just as close as set three and was tied 18 times. North Dakota State was up multiple times before South Dakota came back. With the Bison up 13-10, the Coyotes went on a 5-2 run to tie the set at 15. Brown tallied two kills during the run and Dotseth added one more. North Dakota State took another lead at 21-19 before Dotseth swatted down back-to-back kills to tie the set, again. South Dakota had its chances down the stretch and was up 25-24 and 26-25, but NDSU was able to answer USD each time. There was extra volleyball in the fourth set, but it didn't last much longer as the Bison scored the final two points to win the set 29-27 and the match 3-1.
South Dakota continues the season on the road as the team travels to Indianapolis, Ind., for a match against IUPUI Friday night at 6 p.m.
