The Game
We learned a little bit about this year's version of South Dakota football last week in Des Moines. We will learn a lot more this weekend when the Coyotes take on the Bowling Green Falcons at Perry Stadium in Bowling Green, Ohio.

The game is South Dakota's 10th against an FBS team since 2010, the same year the Coyotes went to Minneapolis and knocked off Minnesota 41-38. This is the first time USD has been matched up against Bowling Green and its first game against a member of the Mid-American Conference.

The Coyotes are 1-0 following a 77-7 drubbing of Drake in last weekend's season opener. South Dakota's offense scored touchdowns on seven of its first eight possessions while the defense held Drake to minus-7 yards rushing and forced four turnovers.

Bowling Green, which last year defended a late two-point conversion try to escape an upset bid from North Dakota en route to a 4-8 campaign, lost to Michigan State last weekend 35-10. The Falcons were outgained 465-212 against the Spartans and reached the end zone early in the fourth quarter on a 46-yard fumble recovery.

About the Falcons
The silver lining for Bowling Green last week was the team held Spartan running back LJ Scott to 39 yards on 15 carries. MSU quarterback Brian Lewerke scrambled eight times for a game-high 69 yards and Michigan State finished with 215 yards on the ground. Lewerke completed 22 of 33 passes for 250 yards and three touchdowns.

Falcon quarterback James Morgan is back after throwing for more than 2,000 yards and 16 touchdowns as a freshman last year. He was 10-for-31 for 145 yards against Michigan State. Wide receiver Scott Miller is an all-conference receiver who caught 74 passes for 968 yards and 10 touchdowns a year ago. Punter Joseph Davidson is one of the best in the nation.

About the Yotes
South Dakota's much discussed depth at the skill positions offensively was very much on display against Drake. Ten different receivers caught a pass with Alonge Brooks leading the way with four catches for 50 yards and two scores. Four different running backs earned carries including true freshman Kai Henry, who ran 12 times for a game-high 75 yards and a score. Austin Simmons quarterbacked most of the second half and highlighted it with a 43-yard scramble and a touchdown toss to Brooks.

Defensively, the Coyotes are out to prove they are better against the run than they were a season ago. They past their first test with flying colors. Test two comes in the form of a Falcon team that twice last year had three 100-yard rushers in the same game.

Week 1 Leaders
South Dakota's 77 points last week were the most scored by an FCS program, topping Weber State (76), North Dakota State (72) and Campbell (70). The Coyotes were also the only team to total six sacks in week one, and one of 15 FCS teams that didn't turn the ball over. The Yotes converted 70 percent of their third downs (12 of 17), which was third best.

Individually, Darin Greenfield's 5.5 tackles-for-loss led all FCS players and his three sacks ranked second. Quarterback Chris Streveler accounted for six touchdowns – all in the first half – which led all FCS players. Phillip Powell was one of three players who intercepted two passes.

Fun with Numbers
Bowling Green ran 55 plays against Michigan State for 212 yards. South Dakota ran 55 plays in the first half against Drake and totaled 400 yards.
