Plethora of Coyotes receive Summit League awards

ELMHURST, Ill.—South Dakota women's basketball has three all-Summit League picks, a pair of honorable mention selections, the Coach of the Year in Dawn Plitzuweit and senior guard Jasmine Trimboli wrapped up both the Defensive Player of the Year and the Sixth Woman of the Year as the league announced its women's basketball awards Wednesday.
 
The Coyotes claimed their third Summit League regular season title in four seasons with a perfect 14-0 league record. USD became the second league champion to finish undefeated and first since 1994.
 
Junior guard Allison Arens and sophomore guard Ciara Duffy both earned first-team all-Summit League status while Trimboli was picked to the second team. Junior guard Jaycee Bradley and sophomore guard Madison McKeever earned honorable mention accolades. In addition, freshman guard Chloe Lamb was named to the all-newcomer team.
 
Arens accrues her second all-Summit League first team award. A native of Crofton, Nebraska, Arens averaged 13.1 points, 4.8 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 1.8 steals per game in league play while shooting 51.4 percent from the floor. She's scored 936 points in her career for 29th in program history. Arens also holds four USD school records for free throws made and attempted (18-20) in a single game, free throw percentage in a game (12-12) and career free throw percentage (.864, 266-308). She had 18 double figure games on the season.
 
The 2017 Summit League Freshman of the Year, Duffy moved into a role on the all-Summit League first team this season. Duffy tallied 11 double figure games during league play with a double-double in the league opener versus Denver. Hailing from Rapid City, South Dakota, Duffy averaged a team-high 14.6 points and 5.4 rebounds during Summit action. She shot 51.7 percent from the floor and 43.5 percent outside the arc in league play.
 
With a trio of awards, Trimboli was named the Summit League Defensive Player of the Year, the Summit League Sixth Woman of the Year and a spot on the all-Summit League second team. Trimboli, a native of Adelaide, Australia, averaged 11.4 points, 4.4 rebounds, 2.4 steals and 1.5 assists in league play. She shot an impressive 62.7 percent from the floor during Summit action. On the defensive end of the floor, in addition to her 55 steals on the season, Trimboli defended all five positions on the court.
 
This marks the first time in program history that three Coyotes have earned all-Summit League honors in the same season.
 
Bradley was selected honorable mention after averaging 10.6 points and 3.8 rebounds during Summit action. A native of Norfolk, Nebraska, Bradley tallied 15 double figure games during the season. She reached her season high of 21 points twice during league play, first at North Dakota State followed by a home win over Western Illinois. Bradley made a team-high 57 threes during the season and ranks fifth in USD history with 174 3-pointers for her career.
 
An honorable mention selection, McKeever averaged 9.6 points, 3.1 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals per game during league play. She tallied a team high 76 assists and 64 steals on the year. McKeever had 11 double figure games during the season and recorded a season-high 17 points twice during the year.
 
Lamb earns a spot on the Summit's all-newcomer team following a freshman campaign where she averaged 6.4 points, 2.3 rebounds and 2.1 assists during league play. Three of her six double figure games came in league play, including a career high 20 points against North Dakota State.
 
Plitzuweit, the 2006 NCAA Division II Coach of the Year, earns the Summit Coach of the Year award in her second season at the helm of the Coyotes. She took a program picked third in the Summit League Preseason Poll and swept the league for the first time since 1994. Plitzuweit, 47-14 in her first two years at USD, has guided programs to 21 winning seasons in 23 years of coaching experience. Her current winning percentage (.770) is the best by a USD coach in program history.
 
South Dakota (24-5) enters Saturday's contest with Fort Wayne riding a league record 18-game winning streak. The game tips off at noon inside the Denny Sanford PREMIER Center in Sioux Falls. It marks the second time USD and Fort Wayne have met in the opening round of the Summit League Tournament.
