South Dakota hosts TCU for the Women's National Invitation Tournament quarterfinals at 6 p.m. Sunday inside the Sanford Coyote Sports Center in Vermillion.
The Game
Two of the top-shooting teams in the country face off in Vermillion on Sunday. The Coyote defense has held teams to a league-best 58 points per game this season, but they face a TCU offense putting up 75 points per game. Winning the turnover battle will be key for the Coyotes in stopping the Big 12's fifth-best team, who spent three weeks of the season in the top-25 rankings. South Dakota has won five games against Power Five programs in the last three seasons including home wins against Illinois, Oregon and Michigan State.
The Coyotes
South Dakota (29-6, 14-0 Summit) is making its fourth consecutive WNIT appearance and fifth since becoming eligible in 2012. The Coyotes won this tournament two years ago and have advanced to the quarterfinals for the second time. The Coyotes were automatic qualifiers for the WNIT after becoming the first undefeated Summit League champion since 1994.
Dawn Plitzuweit is 52-15 in two seasons as coach of the Coyotes. She was named Summit League Coach of the Year after the crown with a team picked to finish third. The Coyotes are going for their second 30-win season in the last three years and third overall.
The Horned Frogs
TCU (22-12, 9-9 Big 12) is making its fourth WNIT appearance in the last six seasons and has reached the quarterfinals for the first time since 2008. The Horned Frogs are the Big 12's automatic qualifier to the tournament as the highest-finishing team in the regular season standings to not make the NCAA Tournament. TCU is led by Amy Okonkwo, the Big 12's Sixth Man Award winner and all-Big 12 second team pick, comes off the bench to average nearly 15 points per game. Jordan Moore, an honorable mention honoree, averages nearly 13 points and seven boards per game. She has made 19 of 22 shots in three games of the WNIT.
