MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The South Dakota men's golf team placed in a tie for sixth place at the Golfweek Program Challenge concluding Tuesday at True Blue Golf Club. The Coyotes totaled 857 strokes over the three rounds to finish one-shot out of fifth place.

"It was great to be out there and back in competition with the guys," head coach
John Vining said. "After a summer of individual golf, we jumped right back into a team mentality right away."

Matt Tolan led the Coyotes on Tuesday shooting a 4-under-par 68. He had four birdies and 14 pars in the final 18 holes. For the tournament, the junior totaled 218 (+2) strokes and placed in a tie for 37
th.

Sophomore
Tate Arends led the Coyotes in the tournament as he tied for 20
th with 214 (-2) strokes. Sophomore
Jacob Michel and senior
Tommy Vining each tied for 33
rd with 217 (+1) strokes. Vining went 2-over-par in the final round as Michel shot 3-over-par.

The final point scorer for USD was
Scott Fudenberg with 220 (+4) strokes in a tie for 43
rd. The junior moved up 15 positions on the leaderboard after shooting 2-under-par in the final round.

"The highlight of the week was having all five guys shoot at least a round under par,"
John Vining added. "It is really encouraging to see these guys tee it up for each other. Sometimes it can be difficult to coach a team in golf, but not with the eight guys we have on our roster. It is going to be a great year."

Campbell won the team championship with 816 (-48) strokes including individuals finishing 1-3. Jesper Svensson won the individual championship at 16-under-par.

As part of the Golfweek Program Challenge, each program combined the men's and women's scores, crowning a program champion. Campbell claimed the title with a combined 1,650 strokes. The Coyotes finished fifth in the 14-team race with 1,763 strokes. The women's teams played Caledonia Golf and Fish Club in Pawleys Island, South Carolina.

South Dakota is back in action Monday at the Ram Masters Invitational hosted by Colorado State in Fort Collins, Colorado.
