Willer named Summit League Offensive Player of the Week

SOC: Willer OPotW

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Senior forward Kellee Willer has been named the Summit League Offensive Player of the Week as announced by the conference office on Monday afternoon.

Willer received the honor for the first time in her career with the Coyotes after leading South Dakota to a 1-0-1 record this week, including a 1-1 draw with Summit League-leading South Dakota State on Sunday afternoon. The Fort Collins, Colo., native starred in Thursday's 4-2 victory against Omaha, scoring two of South Dakota's four goals for her first multi-goal match of the season.

The weekly accolades are the first of the senior's career, and Willer is the second South Dakota player honored this season after teammate Alexis Mitchell claimed the award on Sept. 23.

Strong play from Willer against Omaha gave the Coyotes just their third win over the Mavericks in 21 tries. With the two sides still scoreless at the halftime break, Willer found the back of the net twice in quick succession, scoring in the 51st and 64th minutes as South Dakota built a two-goal lead that it would not surrender the rest of the way.

On Sunday, Willer was one of just three Coyotes with multiple shots against the formidable Jackrabbit defense; the offensive pressure from South Dakota finally ended South Dakota State's 12-match, 1,155-minute shutout streak on Maddison Sullivan's goal early in the second half. The two sides battled to a 1-1 draw as the Coyotes became the first team to take a point from the Jackrabbits in conference play this season.

For the season, Willer is tied for the team lead alongside Mitchell with five goals and ranks second on the squad with 12 points.

South Dakota, currently just one point behind Oral Roberts and North Dakota State for fourth place in the Summit League standings, will return to action on Thursday evening at 7 p.m. as they travel to face the Golden Eagles in a critical matchup with both teams battling to reach the Summit League Tournament.
