Five Coyotes named Academic All-League

S&D: Summit Award

VERMILLION – South Dakota men's and women's swimming and diving team had five members named to the Academic All-Summit League team announced Monday by the league office.
 
Representing the Coyotes are sophomore Elbert Chuang, junior Isaac Morris, junior Josh Sorbe, senior Hannah Gupton and sophomore Haley Pederson.
 
Chuang, a native of Richmond Hill, Ontario, was a member of South Dakota's Summit League championship 800 free relay team. He earned All-Summit League honors in two events, the 800 free relay and 200 free relay, and finished in the top eight in all six events he participated in at the league championships. He placed fourth in the 200 breaststroke and as a member of the 400 free relay while also finishing seventh in the 100 breaststroke and eighth in the 200 IM. The kinesiology and sport science major carries a 3.94 GPA.
 
Morris, a native of Albuquerque, New Mexico, was named the Summit League Championship men's diving MVP after winning the league title in the one-meter event and finishing third in the three-meter event. He participated in the NCAA Zone Diving Qualifying Meet for the third straight season after returning from a torn ACL to dive in the final four competitions of the season. The graphic design major carries a 3.52 GPA.
 
Sorbe, one of three repeat selections of the 10 men selected, posted three top 13 finishes at the Summit League Championships. Sorbe, the student body president, placed ninth in the 1650 free, 10th in the 400 IM and 13th in the 500 free. The Truman Scholarship Finalist, a Brookings, S.D., native, carries a 4.0 GPA in political science and economics.
 
Gupton, a Sandy, Oregon native, earned All-Summit League honors as a member of a pair of Coyote relay teams, the 200 medley and 400 medley. She posted individual finishes of seventh in the 100 butterfly and 15th in the 200 butterfly. The communication sciences and disorders major carries a 3.72 GPA.
 
Pederson, a native of West Fargo, N.D., earned All-Summit League honors in both diving events, the one-meter and three-meter. She finished as the league runner-up to teammate Sarah Schank in the three-meter event while finishing third in the one-meter event. The NCAA Zone Diving Qualifier carries a 4.0 GPA as a business management major.
 
To be eligible for the Summit League Academic All-League team, a student-athlete must have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.30, completed one academic year at their current institution and participated in 50 percent of competitions.
