SIOUX CITY, Iowa—South Dakota sophomore
Landon Kemp vaulted her way into the NCAA's top-10 on Saturday at the Sioux City Relays. A Coyote was the top collegiate finisher in 10 of the 12 events USD had a student-athlete compete in on Saturday.
Kemp vaulted 14 feet, 1 ¼ inches, to win the pole vault at the Sioux City Relays and move to 10th in the NCAA. She joins teammates junior
Helen Falda and senior
Kimmy Peterson in the top-10 standings. Kemp becomes the fifth Coyote in program history to vault past 14 feet, but this marks the first time in USD history three 14-foot vaulters grace the same roster. Freshman
Josephina Wright finished runner-up on Saturday with a vault of 12-1 ½.
Junior
Nick Johnson won the men's pole vault with a clearance of 16-5 ¼. Senior
Kaleb Ellis took third with the same height.
Three different Coyotes swept the three men's throwing events.
Senior
Ethan Fenchel threw 199-0 in winning the hammer throw. Sophomore
Matt Slagus took third in the event.
Senior
Ben Hammer launched the shot put 58-3 ¼ to take first in that event. He's one of four Coyotes who have thrown the shot put past 60 feet.
Sophomore
Jackson Coker won the discus with a throw of 154-11.
In the lone women's distance race of the day, sophomore
Morgan Lawler raced to a win in the 5,000 meters. She won it this morning in 17:46.81. Classmate
Laura Nelson finished runner-up in 17:53.02.
Senior
Hunter Paulsen opened the morning with a victory in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. He crossed the finish line in 9:52.72.
Sophomore
Callie Henrich swept the shot put and the discus. She captured the shot put with a throw of 47-9 ¾, coming off her 49-foot performance from a week ago. Henrich took the discus with a throw of 149-6. Classmate
Leah Dusterhoft took second in the discus.
Rounding out the women's throwing events, senior
Lara Boman was the top collegiate and second overall in the women's hammer throw. She sent it 190-3 in the competition. Junior
Emilee Shostrom and Henrich finished just behind her in the field.
South Dakota splits its squad between various meets in southern California, Ashland (Ohio) and Northwestern College (Iowa) next week.
