VERMILLION, S.D.—South Dakota senior defensive end
Darin Greenfield (Sheldon, Iowa) has been named to the Missouri Valley Football Preseason Defense Team announced Wednesday by the league office. In addition, junior linebacker
Jack Cochrane (Mount Vernon, Iowa), junior safety
Phillip Powell (Chicago, Ill.) and junior punter
Brady Schutt (Orange City, Iowa) received enough votes to earn honorable mention.
Greenfield is a two-time All-American and two-time first-team all-MVFC honoree. He finished 20
th on the ballot for national defensive player of the year last season. Of the returners to the MVFC this year, no one has recorded more sacks (15.0) and tackles-for-loss (34.0) than Greenfield over the last two seasons. He is also the Coyotes' third-leading tackler in that span.
In 33 career games dating back to 2016, Greenfield has accumulated 141 tackles including 41 for loss and 19 sacks. He has the fourth-most sacks and sixth-most tackles-for-loss in program history. He will take a run and reaching the top of those two lists in 2019.
Cochrane started all 11 games at middle linebacker last year as a true sophomore and finished second on the team in tackles with 82. Academically, he earned CoSIDA Academic All-District honors for his work on and off the field and was a first-team member of the MVFC All-Academic team. Cochrane is the program's first first-team pick since 2012.
Powell started four of the final five games of his redshirt freshman campaign in 2017, and was the Coyotes' second-leading tackler in that span. He started the first three games last season before sustaining an injury that kept him out of all but one game the rest of the year. Powell intercepted passes in each of the first two games of 2018 for a team that totaled seven picks in all. He also forced two fumbles in a 27-24 loss at Kansas State.
Schutt is entering his third season as the Coyotes' punter. He was named to the MVFC all-Newcomer team as a redshirt freshman in 2017 when he averaged nearly 40 yards a boot. He ranked third in the Valley and 12
th nationally with a punting average of 42.9 yards last season. More than 30 percent of his 126 career punts have been pinned inside the 20 and 13 have been placed inside the 10.
