Notable & Quotable from North Dakota

South Dakota limited North Dakota to 50 yards rushing and 258 yards overall during a 20-13 victory Saturday inside the DakotaDome. It marked the ninth consecutive season that the Coyotes have defeated a top-25 team, and the program's 12th top-25 victory since 2013. It also pushed South Dakota back into the rankings for the first time since March.

Here are more notes from week six:

  • There are no "official statistics" for missed tackles and yards after contact in college football, but UNOFFICIALLY, Travis Theis broke 15 tackles and had 104 yards after first contact Saturday.
  • Theis carried a career-high 23 times for a career-high 138 yards. He is the third Coyote running back to rush for 100 yards this season.
  • South Dakota has featured a 100-yard rusher in three of the last four games.
  • Northern Arizona's Kevin Daniels' 67 yards rushing remains the high against South Dakota this year.
  • South Dakota (6 games played) and Chattanooga (4 games played) are the only FCS teams yet to allow a rushing touchdown to a running back this season.
  • Caleb Vander Esch had season highs of eight catches and 92 yards. He scored his first touchdown of the season and ninth of his career. The eight catches are most by a Coyote in a game this season.
  • Vander Esch entered the top 10 on the Coyotes' all-time receptions list with 108. He is tied for eighth-most in program history. Dustin Nowotny's 114 catches are fifth-most.
  • Vander Esch needs 161 yards receiving to enter another program top-10 list.
  • Wesley Eliodor snagged his first collegiate receiving touchdown. His first collegiate score was a 99-yard kickoff return against Missouri State back in week four.
  • Mason Lorber has made eight consecutive field goals since a miss at Kansas to start the season. He remains the most accurate kicker in the Valley.
  • Lorber's 54-yard field goal was a career long and tied a program record set back in 1990.
  • Lorber has made two field goals in a game nine times as a Coyote.
  • Da'Raun McKinney got his first and 11th tackle as a Coyote during Saturday's game. He is now the 12th-leading tackler on the team.
  • Linebacker Tre Thomas had a career-high six tackles
  • Nick Gaes got his team-leading third sack of the season.
  • Both teams possessed the ball four times in the second half.

QUOTABLE

Senior wide receiver Caleb Vander Esch
On the execution Saturday…
"The game plan was to get the ball out to our skill position players hands and I think we did that solidly. On the defensive side, I know they really emphasized stopping the run. And with UND having the running back that they do and only putting up 50 yards shows how composed and ready to play our defense was so that's exciting stuff."

On the passing game success…
"We knew they were going to play a lot of zone coverages so we wanted to take advantage of that early. I think that forced them to change what they like to do defensively. They like to bring pressure so getting the ball out in the first half opened some opportunities for us in the run game, especially later in the game when we had the lead."

On 108 career receptions…
"It has a lot of meaning, especially for someone who came here as a walk-on. I know that's been talked about quite a bit, but you never know what's going to happen and honestly, I had no idea I was even going to be able to play or get on the field much early in my career. There have been a lot of ups and downs, but to get on that list is pretty special. Hopefully I can keep climbing."

Senior linebacker Jack Cochrane
On the game…
"The big thing going into the game was making sure we didn't give up explosives. I think we did a pretty good job limiting that. They had a couple on that touchdown drive in the first quarter, but other than that, we managed their trick plays and kept the ball in front of us."

On the difference from the March contest…
"You play a team one time, you know what their style of offense is going to be. That experience helped and I thought our game plan going into this week and our preparation level was really good. I thought we had a pretty good idea of what we were going to see from them in different formations."

On whether this win felt different…
"Every game in this conference is big, and Coach Nielson said it best in the locker room after the game. He said the good thing about winning is it makes the next game that much more important. It's easy to get caught up in that bigger picture, but what really is going to get us to our bigger picture goals is taking each day for what it is."

Senior kicker Mason Lorber
On his record-tying kick…
"I was surprised we even called the kick. Brady (Schutt) pointed at me, and I just never attempted a 50-yard field goal since my first game here. I was pretty excited honestly. But I didn't even realize how far it was until after the kick. Once it went through, I put it in my head and got really excited."

Redshirt freshman cornerback Da'Raun McKinney
On his return to the field…
"I was coming off an injury, and it was an opportunity to showcase my talent. I hadn't gotten to do that this year as much as I wanted to, and this game helped me do that. I have to show my team that they can trust me and show everybody that I can play ball."
