Coyotes down Kansas City in four sets

VB: USD 3, KC 1

VERMILLION, S.D. – South Dakota spread the wealth offensively during Thursday's four-set Summit League victory over Kansas City inside the Sanford Coyote Sports Center.

The Coyotes had five attackers record eight or more kills while defensively the team notched 13 total blocks, the most in a Summit League match, and 72 digs, a four-set high on the season.

The 25-20, 24-26, 25-19, 25-16 win allowed South Dakota to sweep the season series with Kansas City and remain alone in the third place at 9-2 while moving to 12-8 overall.

"Being able to win in four against Kansas City is something we haven't done in a while," coach Leanne Williamson said. "So I think that was good for our team to be able to see that we could put a team like that away in obviously shorter sets."

"So we kind of expected a high-level volleyball match going into tonight and I just felt like we looked a little bit calmer in some of those situations where they started to make a run, you know, even in set two you know, I honestly felt like we almost pulled it out there."

The Coyotes led from start to finish in taking set one, while set two featured the most lead changes and ties in any set of the match, with four lead changes and seven ties.

South Dakota rallied from a 20-16 deficit to even set two at 24-24, only to see Kansas City pull out the set with the next points.

The Coyotes, hitting over .300 in each of the three sets they were victorious in, had three in double figures in kills led by junior Elizabeth Juhnke with 16 while Sami Slaughter and Maddie Wiedenfeld had 13 apiece.

Madison Harms had nine kills and nine total blocks while Aimee Adams chipped in eight kills and six total blocks.

Madison Jurgens posted 52 assists, nine digs, three kills and two aces while Lolo Weideman had 28 digs and two aces.

Juhnke added 11 digs defensively to record her 10th double-double of the season while Adams reached double figures with 10 digs.

"I felt like defensively we got better as the match went on, both back court and at the nets," said Williamson. "Then, offensively, I mean every game that we won we hit over .300, that's a hard thing to do against a team like Kansas City."

Set three saw only one lead change and four ties as Juhnke had five kills, Slaughter four and Adams three.

South Dakota, like set one, led from start to finish in set four as Harms had four kills and three blocks in the set while Wiedenfeld had four kills, Jurgens 13 assists and Weideman 10 digs.

The Coyotes close out the two-game home stand with Saturday's 1 p.m. match against Oral Roberts.
