Special N&Q with reactions from SDSU

It's a special edition of Notable & Quotable. We've asked our 11 seniors to offer a first-hand account of what they remember from the final play of what will be a Senior Day they will never forget. So light on the notables, heavy on the quotables. Let's get to it!
  • According to MVFC associate commissioner Mike Kern, Saturday was the first game in league history ever decided on a final play Hail Mary.
  • Jeremiah Webb entered the game with three career catches for 32 yards. He had six catches for 153 yards. His winning catch was his first collegiate touchdown.
  • It was the Coyotes' second consecutive win in a series with 115 chapters.
  • Senior linebackers Jack Cochrane and Jacob Matthew led USD with nine tackles and helped limit all-American Pierre Strong Jr. to 3.7 yards per carry.
  • Cochrane became the seventh player in program history to reach 300 career tackles. Only 10 players in the country have more interceptions than his four. Cochrane tackles Strong on the 2nd-and-7 play and the 3rd-and-4 play before SDSU threw incomplete ahead of the Hail Mary.
  • South Dakota punted once, SDSU twice in a game in which both teams had nine possessions.
  • Elijah Reed became just the second FCS player this season to force three fumbles in one game.
QUOTABLE

Mason Scheidegger
"I was standing next to Coach Prevost and Austin Wallace discussing the situation. We all mentioned the fact that we had never been a part of something like this before. Austin mentioned before the ball was snapped that he was going to head butt me if we scored.

"My mind went completely blank and I began watching the o-line to see how well they blocked in order for Carson to get a throw off. Once the ball was released, I immediately looked towards the crowd to gauge their reaction to determine the play. I was on the opposite side of the field, so I wasn't able to see the catch at all.

"My immediate reaction was to protect myself from an ensuing head butt from Austin. But we both began hugging and jumping up and down like little school girls. I ran and gave Coach Prevost a hug and then we looked to the video board to make sure it wasn't going to get reversed."

Caleb Vander Esch
"Before the play, I was just hoping Carson would be able to run around enough to give us some time to get down to the end zone. During the play, it was almost as if time stopped once the ball was in the air. Everyone was standing there watching the ball come right at us. Then it was pure chaos with the ball getting tipped around. I saw it coming right at J. Webb and we both reached for it. I saw that he got a hold of it, then did what I could to help push him into the end zone.

"Once he was in the end zone, it all became a blur. The ball kind of popped up into my hands and I turned around and the whole team was streaking across the field. So I just took off to go with everyone, and that's where the confusion was about whether it was me or J.Webb who caught the ball. I've been catching flack on social media for running with the ball, but I was just trying to celebrate with my teammates. All the credit to J. Webb for making the play. I was in no way trying to take credit for the catch. I have never been a part of a play like that. It's the sort of thing that you always dream about. Pretty incredible. Great day to be a Yote!"

Jackson Coker
"We all know the Hail Mary is not a high percentage play, but they gave us one snap and I knew we had a chance to take advantage of it and get the job done. From my view, all I saw was the ball tipped up, a small cheer, then a giant roar of the stadium. I was in such disbelief that I waited until the official confirmed the call to celebrate. It was a Cinderella ending to a hard-fought game on both sides."

Brady Schutt
"When I saw their offense go back out on the field, I assumed we wouldn't get the ball back because they were going to run around and run out the clock. Then I was worried we weren't going to get that second back. During the play, I didn't even know if Carson was going to get a chance to get the ball off because of the pressure. I really couldn't see the catch but saw everyone running and cheering. After that, everything was chaos. I started running towards the end zone in shock. I didn't really know what to do, so I started running around the field aimlessly embracing my teammates and coaches."

Brett Samson
"My first thought was that I was in shock that we got another opportunity. I have no idea why they didn't punt that ball, but they gave us a chance and that's all we needed. That entire play felt like it was in slow motion. It felt like forever before that ball came down. But being in the middle of that pile, I was just trying to get guys out of the way and tip it up to anyone wearing red.

"It's funny. Before their quarterback threw the ball away, their whole section of fans were waving goodbye to us on the field. So right after Webb caught it, me and some other guys thought it was only right to say our goodbyes back to them. We waved them out of the Dome!"

Elijah Reed
"Before the play, I whispered a quick prayer and was nervous, but felt really good and felt that the Hail Mary would work out for us. On the snap, I quickly watched the o-line, making sure Carson Camp had enough time to get the pass off. He threw a great ball and J. Webb had great concentration on the ball as it was tipped around and made a great play. After that, I rushed the field and celebrated with the guys. This is a special group!"

DeJaun Cooper
"I was hoping the officials would give us the one second back. I knew the offense had to take a shot. I immediately stood on the bench to get a good look. I saw Carson snap the ball and roll out, then throw the ball. My eyes followed the ball, seeing it bounce was crazy and for a second time right into J. Webb's hands. I started screaming and yelling. Celebrating with teammates was amazing and a special way to end Senior Day!"

Jacob Matthew
"I felt like it was over. Coach Nielson says we believed to the end, and it feels bad to say, but I'm not sure many did. And if there were believers, I certainly wasn't evangelized. No, there was just the dispirited numbness of the impending loss setting in. I felt more like the fans who were leaving. Seeing my teammates' sunken faces didn't help much, and there were grumbles and murmurs of what went wrong from players and coaches alike.

"I mean, how many times does a Hail Mary succeed? You can't put your hope into something so improbable. I was already processing the loss that had yet to happen. We could've… should've… that was my fault, our fault, keep your head up, we can still win next week… All of our dreams for the season seemed so far away. The final play was just going to be another thing we fell short of accomplishing on Senior Night. Another hope differed to make the heart sick.

"Those thoughts possessed me as the offense took the field. I was so consumed by apathy that I could hardly summon frustration with the referees as yet another play stoppage occurred. Let this game get over with already! But the offense lined up for a second time and the play began. Carson scrambled and heaved up the best toss. The football was tipped once, then twice, and then a flood of hope shattered the dam of my unbelief when the crowd erupted in praise and the referees signaled a touchdown. The next moments were a blur. We stormed the field and it took a few frenzied laps of running around with my teammates for the win to sink in. We did it. We won. Everything is still on the table. I have never been more proud to be a Coyote!"

Mason Lorber
"Before the last play, I kept thinking we still have a chance. We can do this! Carson evaded the rush and chucked it deep. I saw the ball bounce through two State players' hands, then I saw a red jersey catch the ball. Next thing I knew, I was running up the opposing sideline screaming at the top of my lungs. I think that's the fastest I've ran in years.

"I don't remember much besides the yelling and running. I ran up the away team sideline. Next thing I knew, the referees were yelling at everyone to get back to the sideline. After the touchdown was confirmed, my adrenaline took over. For some reason, my reaction was to run in circles while celebrating with my teammates!"

Jack Cochrane
"Hail Mary's are the kind of thing that doesn't really ever happen in football, so to be a part of one in such a big situation is incredibly unique. It was just a special moment that I probably won't ever forget."
