South Dakota led 17-0 less than 10 minutes into the game and never looked back in defeated Northern Arizona 34-7 in the Coyotes' home opener Saturday inside the DakotaDome. It was the program's 17
th home-opening win in its last 19 seasons.
Â
Here are some other notes from week two:
- South Dakota gained 151 yards on 17 plays during its first three possessions which ended with a pair of touchdowns and a field goal. The defense, meanwhile, yielded just 45 yards to the Lumberjacks on their first series.
- Special teams aided those first possessions. Wesley Eliodor now owns two of the program's top-three longest kickoff returns since 2013 (69 yards, 1st; and 49 yards, 3rd)
- Travis Theis notched his first game with two rushing touchdowns. His three rushing touchdowns through two weeks rank third nationally.
- Brett Samson caught his 11th collegiate touchdown pass, most on the active roster.
- Brendan Webb, Tre Thomas and Jason Simon-Ressler all earned their first collegiate sack
- Jeremiah Webb got his first collegiate reception (11 yards)
- Mike Mansaray got tagged with the 13-yard loss on the fumbled reverse try, but take those yards out and he ran six times for 25 yards in his debut
- Kansas running backs ran 25 times for 30 yards in week one. Take out the two max prevent defense plays at the end of the first half, and Northern Arizona running backs ran 20 times for 38 yards. That's 45 running back carries that netted 68 yards against the Coyotes' defense.
- Nick Gaes' career-best five tackles helped contribute to that last note. Four of his five tackles were at or behind the line of scrimmage.
- USD had a 373-235-yard advantage through three quarters. USD ran six plays for seven yards in the fourth quarter. The Coyotes totaled just 23 offensive plays in the second half.
- USD's defensive score factored into that tally. Jonathan Joanis got his first collegiate interception and returned it 51 yards to make it 34-0 less than three minutes into the third quarter.

Freshman quarterback Carson Camp
On the difference in this week's offensive attack…
"Going into practice this week, we really wanted to make sure everyone was on the same page. Last week was a lack of focus on my part. Everyone did their job last week, everyone did their job this week, including myself, so we were clicking on all cylinders.
Â
On those quick first-quarter strikes…
"We were harping all week on execution and jumping on them first and that's exactly what we did. It was really cool to see the crowd really get into it.
Â
On playing in front of the home crowd…
"It was awesome. It was exciting. It was a really good time. It was fun to experience that, the whole Coyote Nation being out there and the fans cheering us on."
Â
Senior linebacker Jack Cochrane
On the defense…
"We played alright. I thought we gave up too many yards in the second half. We didn't get them off the field when we should have in the second half. But overall, I thought we executed pretty well, limited the big plays, which against that team was going to be important, and kept the ball in front of us.
Â
On the progression from the spring…
"We've worked hard. Everyone says that, but I really think we focused and worked hard on being a fundamentally really good defense. I think that's starting show dividends on Saturdays and we're going to keep doing that and hopefully keep getting better.
