Coyotes head to Grand Forks

First Serve
South Dakota hits the road to take on North Dakota at 7 p.m. Tuesday. This will be the first time the two teams will meet this season. The Coyotes continue to lead the Summit League at 10-1. North Dakota, picked eighth in the preseason poll, is currently 9-3 and sits in fourth place.

The Coyotes
South Dakota (21-2) has won eight matches in a row since a 3-2 loss at North Dakota State back on Sept. 27. The Coyotes hit the road after defeating South Dakota State on Friday 3-1 in Vermillion. Junior all-American outside hitter Elizabeth Juhnke continues to lead the nation in kills and kills per set. Junior middle blocker Madison Harms led the Coyotes to a 3-2 reverse sweep of Denver on Oct. 20 with a career-high 13 blocks.

Fifth-year defensive specialist Lolo Weideman continues to lead the Summit in digs per set. Freshman Madi Woodin recorded her second-career start on Friday and dished out a career-high 45 assists. In addition to boasting one of the top hitting percentages in the league, the Coyotes are second in blocks, third in digs, and are holding foes to a .178 hitting percentage.

The Fighting Hawks
North Dakota (12-11) enters the match on a four-game winning streak, including its most recent 2-0 road weekend against Oral Roberts and Kansas City. Earlier this season, the Fighting Hawks defeated the second-place North Dakota State Bison in a five set battle in Fargo. North Dakota's four-game winning streak puts the Fighting Hawks over .500 for the first time since 2019.

Junior setter Elizabeth Norris leads the league with four triple-doubles, which ranks second nationally. Norris' most recent triple-double was a 14 kill, 22 assist, 10 dig performance in North Dakota's 3-2 win over Oral Roberts last Thursday. A career-high 25 digs from senior Kortney Carney helped North Dakota come back from a 2-0 deficit and pull off the reverse sweep.

Sophomore right side Ashlyn Olson posted a career-high 20 kills on a .415 hitting clip in North Dakota's victory over Kansas City on Saturday. Marissa Stockman, a fifth-year senior transfer from Florida State, leads the Fighting Hawks with 70 blocks on the season. Her 0.99 blocks per set sit at seventh in the league.

The Series
South Dakota has won the last nine matchups against North Dakota, with eight of those nine games being 3-0 sweeps for the Yotes. USD is 13-12 against UND in the Division I era. The last time South Dakota lost in Grand Forks was Sept. 11, 2015.

Record Breaking Play for the Coyotes

  • Juhnke set a USD three-set program record with 24 kills in South Dakota's 3-0 sweep of Oral Roberts on Oct. 13.
  • Weideman hit a career-mark in the Sept. 24 Denver match, totaling 34 digs and matching the four-set program record.
  • Harms recorded a career-high 13 blocks in USD's 3-2 win over Denver on Oct. 20, which ties for second in the five-set program record.
