The Coyotes
South Dakota heads to Denver after a career-high 22 points from redshirt freshman
Carley Duffney boosted them to a comeback victory over Omaha last week. The Coyotes beat the Mavericks by seven, while the Pioneers fell 75-64 to Omaha on Jan. 16.
Â
Duffney joined the starting lineup for just the second time on Saturday, but made quite the impact, knocking down 9-of-13 from the floor and draining two triples. Duffney is just the third Coyote to score 20 points in a game this season. Sophomore
Grace Larkins was the second member of the tandem bike, scoring a game high 24 points to help the Coyotes rally back from a 37-31 halftime deficit. Larkins leads the Coyotes in nearly every statistical category and ranks in the top five of the Summit in points, rebounds, assists and steals.
Â
True freshmanÂ
Walker Demers is expected to make her fourth start as senior
Jeniah Ugofsky is still battling an injury, making that six Coyotes in street clothes and eight healthy bodies able to check in. Redshirt sophomore
Alexi Hempe is the team's second-leading scorer behind Larkins at 8.2 points per game.
Â
The Pioneers
Denver has just three league wins so far this season as they rest in seventh in the standings. The Pioneers won three of four games in the first two weeks of play, before a 28-point loss to North Dakota State on Jan. 12 started a downhill trend. Though the three games since then have been losses, they have only been by 10 or 11 points each time.
Â
Last week, the Pioneers took on South Dakota State and had a combined 49 points off the bench, the most by the Pioneers this season. A trio of freshmen led Denver on Saturday, as Mikenzie Jones led all scorers with 20 points and nine rebounds. Madelyn Atkins added 15 points and four triples off the bench. Angelina Robles also supplied points of the bench, putting up 14 points on 8-of-10 shooting from the free-throw line.
Â
Freshman Emma Smith averages a team-high 11.9 points per game and graduate student Ally Haar follows with 10.2 points per game. Senior Makayla Minett averages a league-leading 3.8 rebounds per game.
