South Dakota and South Dakota State meet for the 98
th time Saturday and the Sanford Coyote Sports Center is the setting for this one in a 1 p.m. tip.
Â
The Coyotes and Jackrabbits have been the class of the Summit League since South Dakota joined 12 years ago. SDSU has won or shared six of the last 11 titles. South Dakota has five titles in that span. The Coyotes' first tournament crown came in 2014. Since then, this series has been nearly even with South Dakota holding a 12-11 edge. That includes a 7-0 record in Vermillion.

The Coyotes
Grace Larkins has been asked to carry the load for USD this season and she has done so in a big way. Larkins ranks in the top-three of the Summit in points, rebounds, assists and steals. No Summit player has ever finished in the top-five of all four categories. Help has come in the form of
Carley Duffney who is averaging 12.5 points and shooting 50 percent in Summit play. The Coyotes' top-five scorers are all freshmen and sophomores eligibility wise.
Â
The Jackrabbits
Behind its Big Three, South Dakota has won the last three Summit League Tournaments. But those three have graduated and South Dakota State's veterans are poised to fill that void this March. The Jacks have been tested just once in Summit play this year and that test came back in game one against a surging Oral Roberts team that has won five of its last six. The other 12 wins have come by an average of 26 points.
Â
Myah Selland is seeking her second MVP award. She is one of two six-year seniors in the Jacks' lineup along with fifth-year senior Paiton Burckhard and fourth-year junior Tori Nelson. Haleigh Timmer has been the star of late. She is averaging nearly 15 points over her last nine games. Paige Meyer and Kallie Theisen provide plenty of help off the bench. Theisen has grabbed 36 rebounds in the last three games (in just 51 minutes!).
Â
First Meeting
SDSU took three years of frustration out on
Kayla Karius' young Yotes last month in Brookings. The Jacks placed six in double figures, made 17-of-32 three-pointers and shot 60 percent from the field in a 118-59 win. Larkins was saddled with foul trouble and played just 18 minutes and Aaron Johnston pushed his horses until the score read 105-46 well into the fourth quarter. Burckhard led all scorers with 22 points.
