SIOUX FALLS, S.D.— Thirteen South Dakota track and field athletes, nine women and four men, have been voted to the Academic All-Summit League Indoor Track and Field teams announced Wednesday by the league office.
Representing the Coyote women are fourth-year junior
Carly Haring, fourth-year junior
Gen Hirata, third-year sophomore
Abrielle Jirele, fourth-year junior
Madison Jochum, third-year sophomore
Erin Kinney, fourth-year junior
Lydia Knapp, third-year sophomore
Cassidy Mooneyhan, sophomore
Marleen Mülla and third-year sophomore
Jacy Pulse. Representing the Coyote men are sophomore
Spencer Buley, fourth-year junior
Marshall Faurot, fourth-year junior
Dylan Kautz and fourth-year junior
Hugo Morvan.
Spencer Buley, hailing from McKinney, Texas, placed fourth in the pole vault at the Summit League Championships with a clearance of 16-8 (5.08m). The mark was just shy of his career best 16-9 ½ (5.12m) set earlier in the season at the Tyson Invitational. He makes the academic all-league team in his first season of eligibility. Buley boasts a 4.00 grade-point average while majoring in sports marketing and media.
Marshall Faurot, who hails from Scott City, Kansas, won a Summit League title in the pole vault with a clearance of 17-0 (5.18m) at the championships. It was his third vault over 17 feet during the indoor season. This is his fifth consecutive academic all-league team. Faurot carries a 3.81 grade-point average as a kinesiology and sport management major.
Carly Haring, a native of Mitchell, South Dakota, was awarded the Summit League Scholar of the Championship as the participating athlete with the highest undergraduate cumulative grade-point average. Haring finished runner-up in the high jump at the Summit meet, clearing a season-best mark of 5-8 ¾ (1.75m). This is her fifth career academic all-Summit honor. Haring boasts a perfect 4.00 grade-point average as a medical biology major.
Gen Hirata, hailing from Fredericksburg, Virginia, garnered All-America honors in the pole vault with an eighth-place finish at the NCAA Championships. She vaulted a personal best of 14-4 (4.37m) at the Summit League Championships, finishing runner-up for all-Summit honors as well. The height ranks fourth in program history. She picks up her fourth career academic all-Summit honor. Hirata owns a 3.93 grade-point average while majoring in media and journalism.
Abrielle Jirele, who hails from Eden Prairie, Minnesota, was the Summit League Track Championship MVP with 21 points at the conference meet. She finished runner-up in the mile and 5,000 meters to garner all-Summit honors in both events. She also finished fourth in the 3,000 meters. Jirele broke South Dakota program records in both the mile (4:44.47) and 3,000 meters (9:30.48) during the indoor season. This marks her third career academic recognition from the league, with two honors on the track and one for cross country. Jirele boasts a perfect 4.00 grade-point average as a communication science and disorders major.
Madison Jochum, a native of Salix, Iowa, ran a leg of the gold medal 4x400-meter relay at the Summit League Championships. She also placed fourth in the 800 meters with a time of 2:14.48. She moved to fifth in program history for the 800 meters, clocking a personal best 2:11.03 at the Tyson Invitational. This marks her first time making the academic all-Summit team. Jochum carries a 3.74 grade-point average as a kinesiology and sport management major.
Dylan Kautz, who hails from Norfolk, Nebraska, was voted the Summit League Most Outstanding Performer of the Championship. He tied for points with the Track Championship MVP and broke the lone Summit League Championship meet record on the men's side. He clocked 6.64 seconds in the preliminaries of the 60 meters to break both the meet and South Dakota program records. He went on to sweep the 60 meters (6.68) and 200 meters (21.56) on the weekend. He finished the season ranked 32nd nationally in the 60 meters. He picks up his fourth career academic all-Summit honor. Kautz holds a 3.86 grade-point average while majoring in accounting.
Erin Kinney, a native of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, was voted the Summit League Most Outstanding Performer of the Championship. She broke the Summit League Championship meet record in the preliminaries of the 60 meters with a clocking of 7.24 seconds. The time was also a South Dakota program record. She went on to sweep the 60 meters (7.27) and 200 meters (23.96) at the Summit meet. She finished the season ranked 22nd nationally in the 60 meters. This is the first academic all-Summit League honor of her career. Kinney carries a 3.88 grade-point average as a kinesiology and sport management major.
Lydia Knapp, a native of Linden, Iowa, won a Summit League title in the weight throw with a toss of 67-2 ¾ (20.49m). She finished just shy of her personal best mark of 67-8 ¾ that was set at the USD Alumni Meet. That distance ranks second in program history and ranked 35th in the nation this season. This is her second career academic recognition from the league. Knapp owns a 3.78 grade-point average as a medical biology major.
Cassidy Mooneyhan, hailing from Pea Ridge, Arkansas, qualified for the NCAA Championships in the pole vault. She earned second-team All-America honors with a 14th-place finish. Mooneyhan vaulted a personal best 14-2 (4.32m) at the Summit League Championships, placing third for all-Summit honors as well. The height ranks sixth in program history. This is the first academic all-Summit honor of her career. Mooneyhan boasts a perfect 4.00 grade-point average while majoring in psychology.
Hugo Morvan, who hails from Vannes, France, earned all-Summit honors with a runner-up finish in the 60-meter hurdles at the Summit League Championships. He clocked 7.93 seconds to tie his personal best in the event. That clocking ranks fourth in USD history. He garners academic all-league honors for the fourth time in his career. Morvan boasts a 3.92 grade-point average as a computer science major.
Marleen Mülla, hailing from Rakvere, Estonia, vaulted a nation-leading height of 14-11 (4.55m) to set a Summit League Championships meet record in the pole vault. She went on to garner All-America honors in the pole vault, placing third at the NCAA Championships in 14-7 ¼ (4.45m). She became South Dakota's school record holder in the indoor pole vault this season. She makes the academic all-league team in her first season of eligibility. Mülla owns a perfect 4.00 grade-point average as a sport marketing and media major.
Jacy Pulse, a native of Salem, South Dakota, took gold in the 400 meters and anchored the gold medal 4x400-meter relay at the Summit League Championships. She added an all-Summit performance in the 200 meters and ran on USD's distance medley relay to tally 19.75 points during the meet. Pulse clocked 54.48 seconds in winning the 400 meters to break the DakotaDome record for the event. This marks her first career academic all-Summit recognition. Pulse carries a perfect 4.00 grade-point average while majoring in nursing.
To be eligible for the Academic All-Summit League team, a student-athlete must have a cumulative grade-point average above 3.30, complete at least one full academic year at the nominating institution, participate in at least 50 percent of their team's competition and be nominated by their sports information director. Voting is conducted by SIDs and faculty athletic representatives (FARs) with the top 15 vote-getters making the team.
