The GameÂ
The Coyotes host the Morningside Mustangs at home on Tuesday at 5 p.m.
The SeriesÂ
South Dakota leads the all-time series 3-0, but this is the first meeting between the former NCC rivals since 2001. Both teams competed at the Division II level then. Morningside transitioned to NAIA in 2002 and South Dakota moved to Division I in 2008.
The CoyotesÂ
South Dakota (0-1-2) is picking up momentum after Thursday's 3-3 tie against Wyoming, the defending Mountain West Champions who remain unbeaten this season. The Coyotes took a 2-1 lead in the second half of that match, fell behind 3-2 and got a game-tying goal from sophomore
Rylee Haldeman who netted her first collegiate goal.
Four different Coyotes have found the back of the net through three matches and sophomore midfielder
Izzy Quintavalle has assisted on two of them from set pieces. USD has also seen freshmen
Brooke Conway, an attacking midfielder, and defender
Sam Luft step into starting roles.
Braving Wyoming was a step forward last week. Bringing the energy into Tuesday's match with an old foe is the key to this week.
The MustangsÂ
With a goal in the 84th minute from 2022 leading goal scorer Keyera Harmon, Morningside (1-0-1) was able to stay unbeaten with a 1-1 tie with Bellevue Wednesday. Both teams struggled to have offensive attacks in the harsh heat. Isabel Ter Weeme had eight saves on goal for the Mustangs while Harmon had three shots on goal.Â
In its first match of the season, Morningside beat Viterbo 3-1 for a strong start to the season. Led by head coach Tom Maxon, the Mustangs are coming off an 8-7-3 season in 2022 in the GPAC.
