MINNEAPOLIS—South Dakota fourth-year junior
Abrielle Jirele had a record-setting day in leading the Coyotes to a ninth-place team finish at the 37th annual Roy Griak Invitational Friday morning on Les Bolstad Golf Course.
Competing near her hometown of Eden Prairie, Minnesota, Jirele tackled the hilly Les Bolstad course in a time of 21:41.9 for 16th place in the women's Gold Race. The 6,000-meter time is the fastest recorded by a Coyote on the Les Bolstad course in the program's Division I era. Jirele was the top Summit League finisher in the 202-person field.
The Coyotes were the top Summit League team at the Griak and ninth overall in the race, defeating four teams ranked in the USTFCCCA's regional standings. No. 22 California Baptist edged out No. 24 Utah for the women's team title with 63 points to the Utes' 64. Other ranked teams in the field included No. 29 Colorado State in third and No. 19 New Mexico in sixth.
South Dakota's had a different lead runner at each of the three races this fall. Seventh-year senior
Abby Ripperda led the Coyotes last time out at the SDSU Classic, while freshman
Madison Brouwer was the top runner at the Augustana Twilight. The pair were the Coyotes' second and third runners on Friday.
Ripperda clocked 22:11.1 for 45th place and Brouwer posted a time of 22:25.1 for 57th.
Fifth-year senior
Ella Byers finished in the Coyotes' scoring five for the second-straight meet with a time of 22:41.9 for 67th. Freshman
Alexis Pagel rounded out the scorers with a time of 23:15.3 for 91st.
Fourth-year junior
Abbie Schmidt and fifth-year senior
Haley Miller were the Coyotes' pushers on Friday morning. Schmidt clocked 23:17.7, a full minute-and-a-half faster than her time on the same course two years ago, for 96th place. Miller crossed the finish line in 23:46.0 for 119th place.
South Dakota men's and women's cross country next toes the line at the Bradley Pink Classic on Oct. 13 in Peoria, Illinois.
