WEST DES MOINES, Iowa—South Dakota senior
Max Schmidtke carded a 7-under par 64 in the first round of the Zach Johnson Invitational Monday at Glen Oaks Country Club. It equals the best 18-hole score in program history. Tommy Vining carded the first 64 back in 2017.
Nick LaMotte duplicated the feat at a home meet last April.

Schmidtke posted six birdies on his first nine holes and was 8-under thru 16. He doubled the par-4 17
th and birdied the final hole to tie the record.

Schmidtke and the Coyotes played two rounds Monday and are in fourth place out of 13 teams at 2-over par with Tuesday's final round still to come. Iowa State is at the top at 20-under par. North Dakota State is five strokes back. DePaul is third at 4-under par.

Schmidtke backed up the 64 with an even-par 71 in round two and is tied for second in the individual race. Iowa State's Luke Gutschewski carded a 65 and a 67 and has a three stroke lead.

An eagle on the par 5 ninth hole during round two moved Schmidt to 9-under for the tournament. He bogeyed 14, birdied the par 5 15
th and double 17 for the second time before parring 18.

LaMotte fired a 70 and a 72 Monday and is in 20
th place at even par.
Cole Witherow went 74 and 70 and is 25
th at 2-over.
Joe Rohlwing (+6),
Logan Hamak (+7) and
Ryan Neff (+7) are also competing for the Coyotes.
