Schmidtke fifth, USD fourth in Des Moines

WEST DES MOINES, Iowa—South Dakota senior Max Schmidtke finished at 3-under par and in fifth place at Drake's Zach Johnson Invitational hosted by Glen Oaks Country Club. It was Schmidtke's first top-five finish of the season and third of his career. He shot rounds of 64, 71 and 75 during the two-day event.
 
South Dakota shot 292 in the final round Tuesday, was 10-over as a team and kept its fourth-place position out of 13 teams. Iowa State, behind medalist Luke Gutschewski, took the team title at 23-under par. The Cyclones were eight strokes better than runner-up North Dakota State.
 
Nick LaMotte posted an even-par 71 Tuesday and was even for the tournament. He moved up eight spots for a 12th-place finish. Cole Witherow was 1-over on his final round and placed 20th individually at 3-over. Logan Hamak (+10) and Ryan Neff (+14) were also featured on the Coyotes' roster. Joe Rohlwing competed individually for USD and placed 35th at 10-over.
 
Fourth place marked the best finish for South Dakota in three events this fall. The Coyotes return to Vermillion and will host the Throwdown Up Top at Landmand in Homer, Nebraska, Oct. 10-11.
