Coyotes drop five-set heartbreaker to South Dakota State

BROOKINGS, S.D. — The South Dakota volleyball team battled but ultimately fell to undefeated South Dakota State in a five-set Interstate Series thriller Tuesday night in the First Bank & Trust Arena.

Kamryn Farris eclipsed 1,000 career digs in the early parts of the first set and tallied a match-high 22 digs. Avery Van Hook dished out 48 assists, had two aces and eight digs.

In her first match against in-state rival South Dakota State, Lauren Medeck led the Yotes and tied a career-high with 20 kills on a .231 hitting percentage. Medeck recorded her ninth double-double of the season with 12 digs. Kylen Sealock notched her fourth straight match with double-digit kills by putting away 19 tonight to go with two blocks and seven digs.

The Coyotes put away 63 kills to SDSU's 61, but the Jackrabbits swung at a higher percentage, .223 to .129.

Following a back-and-forth start to the match, the Jackrabbits held a two-point lead, 17-15, late in the frame. The Jacks closed out the first set 25-18 with an 8-3 run. Amanda Loschen tallied three kills without an error on five swings, but as a team, USD registered a -.094 hitting percentage in the opener.

After dropping the first set, the Coyote attack caught fire in the second, putting away 18 kills at a .444 swing rate. Loschen tallied an early kill to put USD up 6-5, and the Coyotes would maintain the lead throughout the remainder of the set. In an effort to expand upon their lead, the Coyotes scored three straight with a kill from Medeck and back-to-back solo blocks from Loschen to go up 15-11. Holding a 22-21 lead, Van Hook played a part in three consecutive points to close out the set win, putting down a kill, tallying a service ace and assisting on Loschen's kill. Medeck and Sealock led the charge offensively in set two, combining for 12 kills on 18 swings.

Momentum stayed in South Dakota's favor to begin set two, with the Coyotes building a 15-7 lead following an 11-2 run. Medeck was heavily involved for the Coyotes during the run, tallying five kills and two blocks. The Jacks would respond late with a 9-1 run to trim the Yotes lead to one, 21-20. Van Hook's service ace moved USD closer to a 2-1 lead, 23-20, and following a Loschen kill, USD was on set point. The Yotes took the set off a service error by the Jacks, 25-23.

Looking to close out the match win, USD used a five-point run to go up 23-20 late in set four. Morgan Bode started the Yotes run and was capped by Cora Hokenstad's ace. Sealock moved the Yotes to set point, 24-22, but the Jacks would force a fifth set by scoring four straight. Sealock and Medeck continued to pace the Yotes offense with seven and five kills, respectively.

At the side change in set five, the Jacks held an 8-3 advantage and would be the first to 10 points. USD pulled within four following a pair of SDSU errors, but the Jacks scored three straight to close out the match.

The Coyotes return to the Sanford Coyotes Sports Center for a meeting with Denver on Thursday at 7:00 p.m.
